From the Avenida das Descobrimentos, one of the main arteries of Albufeira, in the Algarve, the complex stands tall at the top of the city. Nobody down here imagines what is hidden beyond the imperial facade. But just one visit is enough to realize that Ocean Ville is now reserved for security guards who have been guarding abandoned facilities since 2008, at the height of the real estate crisis in the region.
With a privileged view over the bay, and with the Atlantic on the horizon, the hotel complex could have been a dream destination for customers with blue eyes, blond hair and a foreign accent. It has good access to tar, streets, garden corners, playground, trees and swimming pools, a glamorous and imposing reception. It has everything but people.
“In the wake of the 2008 crisis, there were many hotels that closed or had to interrupt their works”, explains to NiT Elidérico Viegas, president of the Algarve Hotel and Tourism Entrepreneurs Association (AEHTA). The abandonment of space, continues Viegas, who was open only for a few months, "was not unaware of the crisis at BPN or the extinction of Sociedade Lusa de Negócios".
When it was launched in 2008, the project was ambitious: a hotel with 100 rooms and about 80 apartments for second homes. There was an opening party and some celebrities to sponsor the hotel complex, which would close shortly afterwards, victim of the crisis in BPN and a financial hole of 700 million euros, which led to the nationalization of the bank - and the arrest of Oliveira e Costa.
Ocean Ville still appears on booking sites. In Trivago, for example, it is advertised as an aparthotel just over a kilometer from the beach. The photos are from other times: the blue pool, made beds and well-kept gardens. A search on google earth, however, reveals a very different scenario in 2018: garden benches were swallowed by vegetation, unruly herbs grew on the sidewalks, and there was not even a parked car.
