Video Background:
This video is the winner of the 2010 PILL Awards in New York City and is published here in memory of the star Octavia St. Laurent (Paris Is Burning, 1991). She was a dear friend, and I had the honor of writing songs, producing, and for a short time, managing her entertainment career. Michael O'Hara, the producer of the record in this video and my co-writer for the song "Queen of the Underground" (with Octavia singing), loved her as much as I did. This was originally a trailer for a documentary that I intended to make about her. It was never completed, but after her death, I felt compelled to release at least this montage as a tribute to her. This video has since become known worldwide as an inspiring artistic work in and of itself and has become iconic in the LGBTQ+ community. It serves as an example of a powerful trans-female figure.
In the early 1990s, I had my dear friend Adam Soch come over when he flew into New York from his video production studio in Los Angels, and he graciously directed and filmed her as I asked her questions (I was the interviewer as well as the video's producer). The footage was taken in Michael's and my apartment where we lived on the Upper East Side. Adam edited in photos of her that she had given us permission to use, as well as video footage of other interviews and appearances she had copies of. Adam took the footage back to Los Angeles to edit. As I mentioned, I published it upon her death in 2009, but now after three decades, after it was first recorded ( the time now is 2024), this wonderful work has gone internet viral. Snippets are being appropriated by new generations on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Because of new generations sharing portions of my interview with Octavia, her legacy continues to propel her as a superstar into the future!
