Belatedly, happy birthday! 🎂 It's been a long time since I read Moon (River) Tiger but I remember loving it so I'm one of those buoyant bees buzzing about it. Interesting it didn't do it for you. I keep meaning to read more by her. "Little bits novels" ought to be its own genre or section in the bookshop. I just got a copy of Losing the Plot too so I'm looking forward to it. I really liked his first book so hope you get a chance to read that too at some point. Love your embodiment of the pub wench in Gilgamesh! Make it a one man monologue at the Edinburgh Fringe please. And thank you so much for showing off my little books and saying nice things and comparing me to Cormac McCarthy! 💕 It does feel a bit like book tube is winding down with two much beloved tubers saying their goodbyes lately, but I think it's just a natural dip rather than a death. I'm aware that I'll sound very much like a grand dad saying this, but having made videos for several years now (which does make me a dinosaur) I've seen lots of booktubers come and go and it's always sad when smart and entertaining booktubers leave but usually it's because life gets too busy to make regular videos and/or their channel isn't progressing/succeeding/growing like they expect. And new booktubers always come along but, like you say, I hope they don't feel pressure to play up to the algorithm or make content with the primary intention of building a business though KZitem certainly does its best to make creators feel like they should be. Anyway, I hope you decide to stick around after the new year as I very much appreciate your thoughtful reviews and video clips of divas.

Thank you! There should be a whole mini series about that pub landlady 😄 Yeah... I do think I was a little hasty in my dramatic take at the end there but never mind haha I think you're right, and there's plenty of people who do booktube with no desire for what youtube wants. Thanks again, and congrats on the books! ☺️

i was talking to my friend about shakespear and women and she made this point that i nvr considered. she thinks part of the reason the parts for women are so few and not very good is that shakespear would have written those for like teen or even younger boys who we can assume might have been weaker actors??? in a sense he isn't writing for adults in the same way he is for the male parts... so rosalind since is disguised as a man for most of the show, you could probably get away with casting a more seasoned young actor instead of an inexperienced boy, and that may be why its a more substantial part???

We've all gone through so much uncertainty in the last few years we need YOU, YOU of all booktubers to stay the course. 😩 I love your monthly wrap-ups as do all the commentators...don't change, just stay classic. Wow, I gotta check out this Penelope Lively! Wow, I gotta check out this Chaucer! 😅 In all seriousness, you make classics not just approachable but fun. They're classics for a reason; you're gonna have a damn good time! If/when you leave booktube I shall be utterly gutted and Grieve just fyi. It's funny to me hearing booktube spoken of this way bc I personally only knew about it in 2020 when I read My Year of Rest and Relaxation that I got just for the cover and then I read the damn thing and was howling wtf just happened to meeeee I must consult The Internet to see other ppl's reactions and then found this community and you and life has felt so sweet ever since. Yes, tt and genz etc are changing the landscape to something more snappy and trendy but to me that just makes the booktubers throwing up their ~45min wrap-up vids that much more unique and precious.

I noticed a bit of a change on booktube too. But hopefully the kind of channels and creators I am following are going to stay. I am always up for new stuff, changes are inevitable, but I hope people will still be doing the familiar kind of videos. As a viewer I can also see the changes (more adverts e.g.). It's sad that KZitem puts so much pressure on the creators. Hopefully the ones, who are not doing it for the money or looking for a steady growing in subscribers, are able to ignore that. I am watching booktube for at least ten years now and it changed my bookish world tremendously. It also helped me through some tough times and I found some amazing friends. So please don't leave, Ben.

Oh definitely not leaving! I was possibly being a bit extra in talking about it but it is interesting to me ha and there are plenty of booktubers who don't care about this stuff so I think it only affects the biggest channels. Glad to hear how much it has benefited you!

happy belated ben!!! Oooo I loved your commentary on Pure Colour, I really enjoyed it when I read it this year. If you haven't you should read Motherhood by Heti, it is insanely good with bits and bobs of vignettes as well, similar repetitiveness style I'd say but it makes the novel what it is!

Happy belated birthday, Ben! I will definitely miss your journey with Marcel when it has come to an end. Moon Tiger is definitely not a perfect novel, but I still loved it. Maybe because of the strong main character and definitely because of the writing. I am a sucker for good writing and am willing to overlook flaws in the plot then.
