-The day after the Yankees were eliminated from the AL East race, Phil Niekro won his 300th game on the final day of the season, hurling a complete game shutout at age 46. Sadly, this would mark the final Yankee broadcast of Frank Messer who after an 18 year run (at the time the third longest of any Yankee announcer behind only Mel Allen and Phil Rizzuto), was dismissed following the season (though Frank had no idea it was coming as evidenced by his final exchange in the broadcast with Rizzuto and his plugging the date of the first spring training broadcast). In this final year he was with the Yankees, Frank had been demoted to radio only and that meant he and John Gordon often did most of the games as a twosome with Rizzuto or White stopping by for just an inning or two. On this day, Rizzuto just stopped for a minute to say goodbye and White not at all so the game is largely Messer and Gordon. This recording has the full post-game show (which I recorded originally) and thus lets us have the very last words a great Yankee announcer spoke as a member of the broadcast team. Frank did two years with the White Sox (1986-87) and called games for CBS Radio in 1990-92 and did return to emcee Old Timers Day ceremonies for the Yankees throughout the 90s. He died in 2001 at age 76.
