I just discovered this absolute *GEM*! Of course he is mimicking that hammer! Are you freakin kidding me?! YOU may have seen an octopus do this! It's a first for me! As others have noted, he did seem to imitate the hammer's shape; he also imitated its movement as though trying to figure out what/why it was doing. I thought he seemed to not like the results of his observation and so retreated into his home, where he also changed color (upset, anger, fear?) for a few seconds.

Interesting. I have been watching videos recently about corvid (crows, ravens, etc.) intelligence. How does an octopus's intelligence compare to that of a corvid? Find an intel. test/puzzle that a corvid has done and compare the performance of the octopus on the same test (it has to be something that can be done both in and out of water). Also maybe introduce a corvid to an octopus through the tank glass a la the cat reaction vid.

I feel that the hammer idea was a bit of a stretch. I have seen better ideas posted in the past. You know those old children's toys where you had to flip a hoop over a peg with water/air pressure. Make a tank that is a giant toy like that and put him in the middle of the arcade =)

Give them mobile tanks that they can learn to control...watch where they go...see what they do...let them go out side...make sure the tank in unbreakable for when it inevitably falls over...give them a way to get back up...partner with a robotics team. This needs to happen.
