The thing that really sold me on how well Air Link worked compared to VD was Google Earth. I had button mapping issues and couldn't even use the Oculus version, had to use Steam VR every time then swap hands and change the mapping, it would also stutter and get very blurry because of the data coming through for loading Google Earth but Air Link launches the native Oculus Store version with no issues and hardly ever gets blurry and keeps a very steady frame rate. I've also run my Quest 2 battery flat a couple times a day playing Lone Echo via Air Link, it never quite worked well for me with VD either but Air Link works flawlessly and ASW definitely helps haha. I am using VD for 120hz though for some games, that's really impressive and works decently. When I played "Room VR: A Dark Matter" the picture was almost indistinguishable between Quest2 Airlink and Rift S, except Rift had little more clarity in distance, but Quest had less screen door. But with Half Life Alyx the Airlink compression is very noticeable. I guess it's because Alyx is more GPU heavy. Also, Quest 2 is much lighter and more comfortable than RiftS. Then I purchased the Cosmos which was WAY over advertised, so I got a refund for it. Then I had the Valve Index and it was the best hard wired VR headset up until that time. Then I bought the Oculus Quest 1 right when it came out because I do NOT like having to exit from a game just to untangle the cable. Good vid VRO 👍 was talking with GT the other day about air link, these are my thoughts on the matter. The only issues I have with air link is. You still have to jump through hoops to play steam VR games (open steam vr , load into steam vr home start a game initially) if you want to play a rift game exit steam vr home back to rift home start the game. Also, it seams air link only runs at 72hrz not 90hrz. Now take VD, you can run games at 90hz and all games that are VR on your system are under the games tab super easy and intuitive. Now I am positive air link will get much MUCH better with time. You got big money behind the devopment of this tech. However who knows what the Dev of VD has up his sleeve when it comes to future plans. The one thing he has going for him is he can always push the envelope with his software being it's 3rd party with showing off new features for wireless PC VR. Where as air link im sure has internal guidelines they have to follow. For me though personally Virtual Desktop is still my goto for PC VR. 👍 However... What I would like to see for air link eventually is. I put on my quest and my library on the quest home screen is separated into categories. Rift PC VR games / Steam PC VR games / Quest games. Or just simply Quest games / PC VR games I click on whichever one and am instantly transported to that piticular game or program. When I'm done hold or click the oculus button on the controller (depending on your options) and back to the oculus main home library screen. You give me that kinda intuitive easy use navigation .. sold 👍

Hi man, can you do a review for Airlink VS HTC Vive wireless Adapter? Right now I'm really confused on which one to pick. I want to play PC VR but wireless. And I'm not sure If I should go with Oculus Quest 2 Airlink.....I own the original HTC Vive, and I am thinking to purchase the vive wireless adapter to use with my Vive purely for the 110° POV. And my wallet only enough for buying Vive wireless adapter or Quest 2 🙏🙏🙏 thanks before

Great video. For me the ability to use ASW is essential for flight simulation. Cheers!

As stated in this video, asw is really only useful with low-med end PC's. With our rtx3090 pc's asw is not necessary and for me, low level flight creates too many wavy artifacts. I find it best to apply a fixed framerate at 40-45fps. Probably a personal preference thing.
@VRFlightSimGuy
3 жыл бұрын
@@tomc1380 Even with our 3090s, you are gonna need ASW if you want a stutter free smooth experience when flying VFR. With it disabled, there will always be ghosting and micro stutters. Like you say though, it's definitely a matter of preference.

@@VRFlightSimGuy I've been flying xp11 and AF FS2 quite a bit today with my nice new Q2 and Air Link. With ASW = 45fps fixed (so ASW = off) everything was smooth-as and looks great. I did find I needed to startup AF FS2 in SteamVR mode to get good results. I think that the Oculus sdk is still having issues with af fs2 in Vulkan.

Overall, Airlink seems like a shittier version of VD really, at least in ease of use. (For a non content creator) I know what I will be staying with. Best 20€ I ever spent. I am frustrated everytime I have to use link mode and use the crappy interface instead of VD

Alyx always uses 10GB VRAM together with Steam VR and Oculus app for AirLink. Since my GPU only has 10GB it naturally starts stuttering after borrowing the "GPU memory" from slow system RAM. So I was thinking about not using the AirLink anymore, but rather buying Virtual Desktop in order to save 2GB VRAM.

I played the entire weekend using AirLink on my Quest 1. The biggest advantage is really to have the Oculus overlay with its ability to display Discord, Firefox and the likes inside my headset while I'm playing. As I prefer to be as FB free as possible however, I think I'll go back to VD for wireless stuff or AMD ReLink VR which has even less latency than both VD and OAL.

Great review! I have mixed experiences with Airlink, against constant ones with Virtual Desktop. It sometimes runs smooth, most of the time not, whatever configuration. It is only at its best near my router. Virtual Desktop nearly never let's me down. But since Airlink is still in beta, it might improve. Anyway I find both good and am glad to use them both. I forgot to mention: I'm playing most of the time outside of my house. Now with airlink I need to remember that it turns itself off after 24 hours of not using it. Virtual Desktop not. So yesterday I tried it again and if I didn't have VD on my Quest, I had to take off my headset again and walk to the computer to turn it on. In itself not a big deal, but boring to do so. I could turn it on via Virtual Desktop. What Airlink also does, is giving a copy of my 4K desktop on it's virtual display. I'm using a 4K TV as monitor and the setting is 4096x2160, which is fine to work on. But in the Quest it is hard to read the content and the screen is too big. Virtual Desktop gives me a 1080p screen and is easier to use within the Quest. But then again what I like about Airlink: if I'm in a game and I have a trainer running in the background or any other program I need quick acces to, I can have it as a single app running next to my game and with the klick on the taskbar within airlink I can get acces to it. But in general I still like Virtual Desktop better, especially given the fact that my gameplay outside is via a second router and it just works better for me this way. In the last hour or so I tried Airlink with my Acer Nitro 5 laptop with a RTX2060.... Though it works, I cannot get any Steam programs work. Also Steam VR doesn't show. On my PC I tried Half Life Alyx, it runs on my laptop with Virtual Desktop very well, but Airlink doesn't show it. My virtual desktop in Airlink is black and if I call a running program, it appears very distorted. So here Airlink doesn't work for me. So far with Virtual Desktop nearly never problems.

Did you just include the video captured from the PC for this review? Why didn't you use the video recording functionality from the headset? That was the point of the review wasn't it? Not trying to be rude about it either, I can see how you may of done this out of habit, and please reply to my comment if I'm wrong also as there appears to be a mixture of experiences regarding all this

This needs to be re visited. I just played some VR using Air Link but thought I was hard wired linked the whole time. There was 0 lag and even on my TV the gameplay and audio playing vr was perfectly in sync as before using either VD or Air link the TVs visual and audio was always behind then what was happening in the headset. Surprised me honestly and was able to enjoy beat saber with the family completely wireless and perfectly im sync. They've honestly outdone themselves.

Hi Mike, Sadly, nothing compares with a Proper PCVR headset. The Quest 2 Encoder & decoder leaves a lot to be desired... Resolution is scaled down, then we have the "macro blocking feature" present in all videos due to video encoding and sending a VIDEO stream to the headset... Until Quest 2 supports NATIVE UNCOMPRESSED frames via LINK or AIR LINK, the abysmal degradation will be there! Yes, I have both a Vive Pro + Wireless kit and a Quest 2 (I use both of them for my projects) and while the Quest 2 is "great on paper" it fails spectacular when compared with a proper PCVR headset. Just my 2 cents :)

After I paired Air Link the Q2 settings app locked up and wouldn't re-open. Rebooted, same thing. I even performed a factory reset, repaired Air Link and got the same issue. I then decided to check my PC using Resource Monitor. It turned out my Windows firewall was blocking the port needed by OVRServer_X64. Once the port was open Airlink finally connected. Thankfully nothing was lost doing the factory reset. But in hindsight I should have checked if the ports were open before doing it.
