This makes me so excited. I originally wanted to go to school for psychoacoustics/neuroscience, but went more towards the production & entertainment (and cheaper) route. This is like the perfect hybridization of that. Thanks so much for this talk.

"Avoid busy mixes" is also an interesting level design choice - you can make the player feel confused with a busy sound scape Really interesting talk! Can't wait for the first 3D head tracking music videos to come out :)

About that subwoofer-thing: PLEASE make that available/integrate that feature in the runtime (e.g. as a checkbox) if there is a 2.1 or 5.1/7.1 setup connected to Windows anyway (which should be the case for most gamers). Would greatly increase presence in Elite, Project Cars, EVE and in countless other titles. Basically it's just a lowpass-filter, right? So you would need something like a loop-back-driver for windows to access the LFE-channel of the default audio interface which is normally used for non-VR-applications?

If you want some 3D music, the Lou Reed record Street Hassle is entirely binaural. Of course, it doesn't do any positional tracking, but you can still sort of hear that a cello is to your left and slightly behind you.

Will the MP3 format need to be updated to include spatialized sound or will a new audio standard be developed? I am so impressed by this video. I feel like we have never had true sound or music until now. I experienced your building demo and rubber duck demo but didn't put this together because the sounds were attached to objects. I want to experience a demo with a famous band or music artist.

While MP3 is basically obsolete technology and the current, open/free standard for lossy compression is Opus www.opus-codec.org/ , your question is very much valid. The current audio formats are structured in terms of channels, and miss the information that would allow a point-based 3D representation. The infrastructure is not in place for that kind of music distribution, at both the production and consumption ends, and even live music amplification most often loses positional cues, sadly.

When you were discussing the problems associated with convolution reverb in VR, I think that convolution itself isn’t inherently the problem. I bet if you were to capture and the sine sweep with an Ambisonics mic prior to deconvolution, you’d have something great.

You could then reconvolve the output of that with your existing HRTF IRs.

Very cool. Can you move the head around in the plugin in 3D or is it limited to the top-down view? Does the plugin have any occlusion simulation FX? Does the plugin output to binaural or do you need another plugin like Harpex to convert it? Have you guys considered adding OSC input to the plugin so that you can simulate head-tracking with a controller like GryOSC?

the shoebox model - would it help to have head position parameters that you can update when moving through the virtual "room"? Surely that adds another layer of calculating the sounds already in the virtual air when you change the position (doppler but not only)

how about doppler effect? is that working in vr?

I wonder if the inverse square law for sound attenuation with distance is correct. Shouldn't it rather be an 1/r law because the sound pressure is proportional to that and i guess that the amplitude of the eardrum is proportional to the pressure.
