Having tried both, I'd have to say I'm more excited about the Vive. That being said, I will be getting both. I think the bundled controllers and focus on room scale are huge advantages for the Vive, because that's kind of what I'd consider "true" virtual reality. It's simply easier to get immersed when you have hands. However, I like how Oculus seems to be working on experiences outside of gaming. I think it will be awesome if they are able to create new ways of experiencing media like movies.

I hope someday those controllers are replaced with motion sensing gloves. It would be cool to pick something up, and have the gloves expland and place pressure on your hand as if you were actually holding something. Than you wouldn't need to click a button to pull a trigger on a gun, because the trigger on the gun itself would be the button. Probably far off tech, but it'll be cool if it happens someday :b

@aritakalo8011

+Frankie Dingleberry Theoretically nothing stops from someone making motion sensing gloves for VIVE (actually they will work even with Occulus as long as software support is there on Oculus side and you have the laser light houses, since the lighthouses and VIVE are independent of each other. Though mapping the Oculus camera tracking coordinate system to the light house coordinate system will be a pain in the ass to do). Valve has stated that they will release Lighthouse tracking tech for free licensing. (essentially you get to use the protocol freely as long as you comply with compatibility requirements. Though Valve also does make a sensor package for it, so if you want to get the ready made package you of course have to pay for the sensors and processing chips. Luckily they can do this since Valve owns the tracking IP not HTC, which is only licensing the tech from Valve, Though in close co-operation.). Not really surprising, because they are trying to boost Vive by trying to make Lighthouse the defacto tracking standards for peripherals. Only problem I could see with gloves is occlusion, which will be a bane for all techs outside magnetic and radio tracking. Though if you combine glove with full frap around wrist ring, you should get pretty good coverage. Atleast for Lighthouse. If not for occlusion, it will me really easy to do motion sensing gloves. You slap let's say a 5 point constellation of Lighthouse laser sensors and the related IMU and ASIC on the back side of the hand and presto you have a hand tracking glove just add bluetooth and battery to be able to tell the computer, where the gloves calculate themselves to be located. Finger tracking has been traditionally done with bending sensitive material strips, from which you can sensor out the positions of the fingers. Though the force feed back might be little hard to do. Though I would think pneumatic bladders on the palm side of the hand and fingers connected to small compressor unit and intelligent valve system could create for example resistance against closing your fist etc.

I don't see the issue with the price point of 600 dollars or even more. People need to realize that this is a completely new technology, even more so than the 3DTVs in the mid-2000s or OLED-TVs. This is a completely new experience and at the beginning, at has its costs.
@lostpopcorns
8 жыл бұрын
+overTIMe It's not so new when you can reproduce this technology with a piece of cardboard and a smartphone. And we've had smartphones for quite a while now. Do you know what I could buy for $600? I'd buy the Oculus for 200 or max 300, but now I'm not interested anymore.
@thegameneededme5
8 жыл бұрын
+overTIMe The issue is that at $600, that's a huge barrier to entry for a lot of people, especially considering the fact that you need a solid PC to even use it. And for there to be games made for it, there needs to be a solid install base. Publishers/Devs aren't going to spend money making games for something that doesn't sell well, because then they won't get a good return on their investment.
@gamerN77

***** I get that. I will certainly not buy one right at the get-go. But this is normal for any piece of new technology. Just think about the first HD-LED-Flatscreen TVs in the early 2000s. It's a really exciting time to be alive. Pity that you need a monster rig just to run all your VR games at a decent frame rate, but being an early adopter is rarely a cheap hobby. That being said, this concerns me a little more than other early adoption scenarios because frankly, the price of solid PC gaming hardware doesn't really budge much these days. I hope something will come along to jumpstart that because if it doesn't happen soon then VR will probably be dead on arrival.... Which breaks my heart, since I've had an absolute blast with my Dev. If the Vive is priced under 1000$ it is the winner hands down (over that and it will floop), since it can do everything the Rift does and then far more. Also the other plus for the Vive is Valve, which means more software. Luk point of view is kind of biased, since he's been an Oculus man from the start, you can check other previous videos to get my point here.

+InitialDAmine Frankly with all the industrial and professional potential allowed by a walkable vitrual work space people like engineers and designers will buy VIVE for their job even, if it cost more. Everybody is going games games games, without realizing that people like CAD engineers, plethora of different types of designers, Architects, 3D artist etc. Are going to eat up these systems and bill it on their companies as tools expenses. 3D modelling artist who can actually walk around their model while sculpting it instead of having to stare through a display window and sculpt with a mouse. As soon as the 3D work softwares add virtual space work support, every damn CADder and animator and modeller will want one. Heck HTC has realized this already at least. They have released couple clearly artist oriented pre-promos, where they have different pretty well known artist do 3D painting using the Vive. Heck high end designers and other industrial people have been already doing this using CAVE systems. Only problem is CAVE system go from couple hundred grand to millions of dollars and are not portable like a Vive. For general consumer use yep 1000$ is pretty much the top price people can eat up as early adopters outside of handful of tech savvy millionares.
@gamerN77
8 жыл бұрын
+InitialDAmine Even if it were to be priced over 1000$. People need to realize that they are holding completely new technology in their hands. Just with 3DTVs in the mid-2000s and OLED-TVs, at the beginning they cost a lot but get cheaper as time progresses.
@finalfantasymad

+Ari Takalo Exactly, people are thinking VR is going to succeed on games, I am doubtful it ever will. The make or break for these products is how they are used in a professional space. Even the ability to make a virtual space inside of the headset with an unlimited amount of screens and functions on each shouldn't be impossible for the Vive, the issue is the cables possibly strangling you but first generation technology always has its major issues. If professionals see potential in the product then it will sell and out of the two the Vive is the one is see working for their applications.

Okay, so I don't think your poll is really representative. I think the Occulus Rift still has the upper hand. This is because most people who aren't that much into tech (and therefor don't follow your twitter) don't even know about the Vive. I've seen tons of TV-shows and KZitem videos with the Rift. Basically none with the Vive (unless you count CES- and LMG-videos). And yes, it is arguable that none-tech people will buy a VR-headset, I still think some people will. (Please note the some).

I think HTC should get some respect for making a product that's as good or better in only about a quarter of the time. Because of the time difference between them it's expected that the Oculus rift is more well known among non-techies out there.

+Lemon Beast The backpack is so you don't have a wire coming to you from your normal computer, but rather have the computer (or rather a laptop) on your back. It's not a control device, rather a solution to prevent you from tripping over the vive cable.

Your comments on the controllers was basically my feeling for the Wii remote, it was the first controller in a LONG, LONG time where you just naturally knew what to do even if you hadn't ever played video games before and the motion integration was so much better then the motion controls in the PS3.

I am struggling to choose between oculus and htc, oculus has more games, but I like the interactivity of the vive + works with steam very well. Rift might get more interactive later on, but you will have to buy it all, which might result in thesame price as the vive in the end.

ceiling cable management solution. a pole that supports the cable and allows it to rotate 360 degrees and no more would keep the cable from touching the ground or getting stepped on. if well greeased the mount would rotate effortlessly assumed that it was perfectly level.

I was at the SteamVR Developer Showcase yesterday. 3 total hours in a headset over the course of the event and I never had a Cable Minion. It was awkward for the first demo only and it only mildly tripped me up 1 single time. Prior to this event I was planning on some ceiling mounted cable manager but after yesterday, I no longer find it worth it. Wireless would obviously be better but even as is, not a concern.

Oculus has stated that it not their intent to make content exclusive to their hardware, only to their platform. At the same time it's not currently possible to use a Vive with content from Oculus. Hopefully this will be solved once the headsets are finally out. You can already use an Oculus Rift (DK2) with SteamVR content.
@aritakalo8011

+intermarer Can't tell 100% because a) nobody knows yet for sure b) it is really up to devs with games. It seems most independents target both SDKs. The rumor is Oculus might be pissy and have exclusives for the stuff they produce directly, frankly would not trust that until I see the actual games release. Being exclusive in this already exclusive niche market is pretty much shooting yourself in the foot. Valve, well valve is targeting SteamVR instead of directly targeting Vive. So anything that works with SteamVR works with Valve games. Of course the one with best SteamVR integration is Vive since it was ground up designed to fully conform with it. Apparently there is a rudimentary support layer for SteamVR for Rift and I think OSVR also has SteamVR support. Frankly majority of games will probably be SteamVR in the long run, because that allows seamless support with Steam interfaces, which just hapen to be the dominant ones.

The HTC Vive looks like it's just going to fail. You need space, which many don't have and wont have for a long time. Some have the space, but need to move stuff around for it, and just like no one bothered to move their couch every time when someone wanted to play the kinect, you wont either. If the Vive becomes wireless somehow then the cable issue gets resolved, but that is unlikely to happen for a while and the backpack idea is not realistic. The moving around idea is also flawed. Unless you can be stationary with some awkward moving platform it's not going to work that well, and you're just going to feel limited and then there is running and that will ruin all the things. If you make it so that some certain movements trigger movements in the game then you'll just get broken out of the immersion and you'll probably get sick from that. The portals/teleporting idea is so limited. If you want to make a VR fps give thumbsticks to the controllers and use those to move around, while the motion controls are used for aiming. You have a lot of freedom as the player and it's not as limited for the dev.
@reJECT0
8 жыл бұрын
Also the touchpads on the vive can be used as thumbsticks. Most VR games will work on all HMDs, technically speaking all games made in Unity and UE4 work throughout the Rift, the Vive, the PSVR and the OSVR.
@sceard9019

Vive can do everything Rift does and more. The ability to stand up and walk around is just plus. And just because you don't have the space for it, doesn't mean that others don't. To me Vive looks like the winner here. But I have to say that the Rift controllers look much better.
@Vitareproject
8 жыл бұрын
There is no backpack needed for the vive. Not for the previous two versions. When setting up the device you can select a seated or moving experience to, so you don't need any more space then the rift. The base stations are now wireless too and don't require any cable. As someone who owns both a vive and rift, and has developed for both I can honestly say the vive is a far superior device in terms of tracking, control and experience.
@Fynmar91

+PolarTrance You are an idiot.
@user-rw9nr1zo8k
8 жыл бұрын
+PolarTrance 1. Vive's seated tracking is better than Oculus in every possible way (tracking volume, latency, occlusion, accuracy, etc) 2. Everything about Vive's tracking is superior to Oculus. 3. Vive isnt wireless and neither is Oculus, but all the controllers both are... 4. Trust me, you do NOT NOT NOT want to play a fps in oculus using thumb sitcks or keyboard to walk around. In real life, I have gone on giant roller coasters with loops that never made me a bit sick. But playing Half Life 2 on the Oculus DK2 with an xbox controller made me more nauseous than I've ever been other than getting the stomach flu. I'm talking within 10-15 min, you get head spins, sick to your stomach, and even a head ache. it sucks. Thats what roomscale Vr solves: virtually everyone who has tried it has come away without "vr sickness". Oculus will not work very well with old shooter game types because of vr sickness, Palmer Luckey said so himself. This is why Oculus AND Vive have both been trying to get developers to limit non-real player movement... it causes straight up nausea. Some seated cockpit examples have been shown not to cause nausea but for some vehicles this is tricky because and angular movement on the camera that is not reproduced in real life can cause sickness. To paraphrase Palmer Luckey, we need to think of new game designs that will work well in VR the same way we needed to think of new game designs to fit smartphones.

personally, the vive is letter, for now, Because on the demo they had shown, people were using the entire room and not just a small area, as well as using the camera giving visibility if something is in the way, I think that's an amazing idea and htc did a great job and is definitely ahead.
