The direct audio feed from the soundtrack is actually superb, very impressed !

I have a silent deck style that I found at a goodwill a couple of years ago. Plays standard 8 beautifully but tends to slip on super 8. I was excited because I can play my grandmothers home movies that she has kept in very ideal condition over the years! She still has a keystone from the 50s but it’s a mess to play. The gate slips and the threading is manual! Takes forever to threat! Plus it tends to run REALLY HOT!!

Cost of the unit: 5 bucks. Cost of the tubing to repair the unit: 7 bucks. Such is life.

I try to keep things more in line with how much a working/preferably restored unit will run--you'll just drive yourself crazy otherwise. Puts the cost of repair supplies in perspective.

GAF - there's a brand I forgot about!

I remember those projectors. I have a dual 8mm/super 8mm GAF projector and camera that weren't sound. GAF had several models. I think now they're just doing roofing and building materials.

I keep wanting to grab a 8mm or 16mm projector, i know it is a money sink...but it looks fun to fiddle around with, like reel to reel.

@@OddityArchive would you go super 8 or regular 8? For projection

My projector of choice (silent only, alas) is the Sankyo 2000H Dual8 (which I did a Ben's Junk on a couple of years ago). You definitely want to stick with the later (70's to present) projectors, as they mostly run on lightbulbs that are still made and are the easiest to service.

@@OddityArchive I am going to get a super8, my grandfather may have some regular 8 stuff, and if it is regular 8 and not super 8, i will find a second projector for that. Found a nice B&H in box that still has bulbs that cost 8 bucks a pop. Thank you for your advice.

Damn! All I ever find are silent 8mm projectors in need of repair... for $30. I need to get a new bulb for my old silent Super 8 Bell & Howell though.

Hollywood somehow thought this camera had enough potential to base a whole movie off of. And I don't even think it was filmed with a Super 8.

This is most likely a Chinon built projector as GAF was mostly just a name by 1974 when it came to cameras. In the 70s Chinon made some wonderful but underrated camera equipment. The reason why it looks like the Sears unit is those were also made by Chinon in the mid 1970s. If you are ever looking to purchase an affordable but amazing 35mm camera, the GAF L-ES is an awesome camera.

Sawyer's, Inc was the original View-Master company ... GAF adquired the company in 1966 and the in some moment they changed the Kodachrome film to a cheap one and that's why some of their picture reels have a red tint and the other colors fade

It's funny, I have 2 of them (GAF 3100S) in like new condition, they look the same as yours from the outside but the inside is quite different.... I really like that projector, it is very quiet and reliable, the only thing I had to replace was the belt.
