@@antoniojanuary7191 i mean context really matters. big men during that time were highly sought after and with greg oden's skillset he was definitely going to be picked number one there. plus no one knew KD would be as good as he is lmao. KD was a lanky dude and there were definitely doubts that his skillset would translate well to the NBA level, and since he was lanky they thought he'd become a liability due to injuries. That's what's so interesting about the NBA draft, even if you think someones going to be good he might be affected by injuries and someone you think might not translate well to the NBA ends up dominating the league ie luka, sga, steph curry, etc.

Yeah, I remember the Oden hype being very strong, and he did have a lot of skills that you want but the injuries are what really did it for his career. He could never stay healthy and it eventually led a reduction in his ability very early on in his career. I also remember when he was coming out a lot of pundits were knocking him because he was like 19 or 20 and he "looked like he was 45" or something, and sometimes I wonder if what made him look older also had an effect on his body in other ways and that's why he struggled to stay healthy. He was obviously talented though, he should have been one of the great ones but people almost don't even remember him other than for being the guy they got picked above Durant.

It was a bad pick then & now, it wasn't like Oden was a generational talent. Oden could only score down low & rebound barring he didn't get injured. When he did score he hung on the damn rim pretending he was Shaq. The opposing team would already be back on offense by the time he landed. I didn't know KD would be this amazing, but I did realize he had exponentially more potential & could always create his own shot.
