There is also a way to change the aperture value like in the video, but if you want to keep the out focus for portrait photography, you can adjust the brightness of the background by changing the shutter speed. In my case, I will choose the result of aperture 2 shutter speed 1/15 rather than the result of aperture f8 shutter speed 1/250 in the video. You probably won't find any photos that shake depending on the duration of the speed light

If you under expose by a stop of available light, the flash needs to make up half of the light to properly expose the model. If you then reduce the aperture by another stop, the available light is now making up one quarter of the light needed, so the flash must make up the remaining 3/4. However by your method, by doubling the power, your flash remains half of the light needed for a correct exposure of your model, so you progressively are reducing the exposure. The method you described works only if it's a flash only exposure where you largely eliminate the natural light. The comparison pictures at 2:19 appear to show this too. She seems brighter with the f/4 exposure.

A very good tutorial for balancing flash outdoors with regards to exposure. Though I'm curious about how you would set the white balance in a scenario like this? I note that it's an overcast day and generally, the colour temperature of flash is closer to sunny light conditions than overcast. So would you set the WB for the main subject (illuminated by the flash) or the background which is dominated by the overcast conditions? Or would you set the WB somewhere in between the two light sources to balance it out?

Native flash sync speed on the camera is usually around 1/200 or 1/250 of a second (depending on camera). Since he was at 1/250, he couldn't go to 1/500 second without the flash being cut off for part of the frame unless he was using Hi-Speed Sync mode. I think with that set-up he could have used high-speed sync, but probably just didn't want to complicate the video by explaining how all of that works, what some of the limitations are, etc.

There's no "best" softbox for weddings. It's all about what your preference is for lighting (quality of light, how far you want to use it, etc.) I typically use the glow 28" EZ Lock deep para softbox nowadays, because it's size is good for handling outdoors without an assistant. @ajbid805
5 жыл бұрын
Shutter speed does control background. Aperture and iso control both the ambient (background) and the flash.
@Alex-rn3ny
5 жыл бұрын
AJ Yes, I understand that. My point was; use shutter for ambient and use aperture & flash power for your model (foreground) while keeping ISO constant and avoid issues with sensor noise. Anyway, there are several options to solve the problem with 4 variables (shutter, aperture, ISO and flash power)
@robhallphoto
5 жыл бұрын
@@Alex-rn3ny I dislike that method of instruction. Partly because it's not thorough, in that aperture controls ambient AND flash (just like iso). It also leads to people dragging the shutter for no reason. People end up with settings that are not optimized with what they are shooting. Finally it goes out the window as soon as you implement something more advanced like HSS, where SS does affect the brightness of your flash.
@TimberedSplash
5 жыл бұрын
There’s another element to this. All 3 settings will vary depending on what the overall look to the image one is trying to achieve. I notice most like the blurred background (known as shallow depth of field) to make the subject pop/stand out in the image. Therefore, aperture is the main Control here , and the Shutter speed and iso will be adjusted to suit the amount of ambient exposure in the shot. But if one is trying to achieve that dark / black background, then one can opt to pick either setting depending on how bright it is outdoors.
@wanneske1969
5 жыл бұрын
I thought you'd darken the background by choosing a shorter shutterspeed. And flash power by the aperture
@robhallphoto
5 жыл бұрын
If I shortened the shutter speed past 1/250s, then I'd be in HSS, in which case shutter speed would affect the flash output, which means that methodology is thrown out the window.
@MrAltijdvers

@@robhallphoto Than you had to start with a smaller aperture (and maybe higher ISO), so you controle the background (natural light) using only the shutter speed. Using your aperture (and flash power) also effects your depth of field. (correct me if I'm wrong)

@@MrAltijdvers You're right. The flash is controlled by aperture and ambient light is controlled by shutter. Flash constant and ambient variable. For him to not go beyond the sync range of 1/250, could have decreased the ISO to have more control to darken the background.

Can’t you just adjust the shutter speed instead of changing both the Flash power and your aperture?
@robhallphoto

To a degree, but there's a very narrow window of how much that can effect your image. For instance, if you're shooting with a longer lens, and don't want to introduce motion blur, you can really only move between say 1/160 and 1/250. (Maybe even 1/200 depending on your camera's sync speed). Any faster and you enter HSS which will make the shutter speed affect your flash exposure, any slower and you start risking motion blur.

By adjusting your aperture you also affected your background sharpness. Not a problem if you’re going to totally black background, or you don’t care about a soft background. It’s better to use shutter speed to adjust ambient.
@robhallphoto
4 жыл бұрын
You're response is incredibly vague to be a suggestion. Increase shutter speed to darken background: Enter HSS, your shutter speed now affects your flash output in addition to ambient. By doing so your flash is now less capable of balancing with ambient light due to the loss in peak output from switching from a single flash pulse to a sequence of flash pulses. Depending on the distance, modifier selection, and ambient conditions, you may not even be able to balance the light. Also keep in mind many beginners are using cameras / flash systems that may not have the capability of HSS off camera. In which case I'd ask, how are you going to use shutter speed to make a background darker when you're already at maximum sync speed? Decrease shutter speed to lighten background: You've got about 1 stop of adjustment power before you start introducing a chance of motion blur (depending on your mechanics, IBIS, support, and focal length). Again, way too simple of a statement to be any type of credible suggestion. In short. There is no "better" or "best" way, as each situation is unique. If you have the flash power to spare and don't need to freeze action, sure HSS could be the best. If you want more background detail, aperture could be best. If you don't have either and ISO is already at 100, ND is the solution. All of which are discussions I've had in more advanced videos.
@insightvideo6136
4 жыл бұрын
Robert Hall Photography ....what’s vague about my comment? Is it not true you sacrificed background effect by adjusting aperture? It might be vague to someone who doesn’t understand photography, but for those who do, it should be crystal clear. There are other ways to make it work without HSS. For instance, you could use a ND filter. Also, a good flash or mono light can handle the reduction in power using HSS. Don’t get so excited. It’s not that big of an issue. Relax.

Another GREAT Rob video. So many different ways to achieve the same objective. Question: Considering the Trigger has TCM, will it be easier to eliminate the guesswork and just shoot ETTL to start with, then convert the automatic flash values to manual value by the push of a button? Or does this trigger not have TCM? Appreciate your feedback as always, Rob.
@robhallphoto
5 жыл бұрын
I personally never use TTL anymore. I think it's faster to switch the manual output 2-3 times rather than get into the TCM function. TTL requires you to mind the TTL compensation based on skin tone, and make sure your metering is for spot, and you are only on skin. If you are using really soft light, the rapid falloff can make your TTL overexposed. If you are shooting wide it can be difficult to keep your meter only on your subject and not let the BG influence the result. Basically, there are a TON of things that can mess with your TTL results that all reduce it's usefulness to me.
