This was so good. Thank you. It’s not the wife who needs appliances, I never dry my hair, no toasters or sandwich makers.. It’s the hubby with laptop running all sat, large monitor, (for both our old eyes) electric guitars, mics and power amp for recording songs . No idea what his amp pull will be but that is my dilemma. I’m the one researching ahead of getting him into a van so I can travel.

When you were reading the small enerdrive gauge you were reading the minus watts, I believe this is what's being pulled from the battery. The solar input then needs to be added to see the exact power draw from the appliance. For instance the 700w toaster was pulling approx 550w plus adding the solar input of 150w =700w just as an example. Just to clarify the readings. You did explain this for the aircon but not the others. (I did start writing this half way through then saw the air con bit. Had to edit lol) Love your vids and the awesome setup you have. Keep up the great work and thanks.

Superb TIAV episode (again!). I took heaps of good notes. It would seem to me that a lot of caravanists could get away with around 200Amp battery and a 2000watt inverter. - That means you could pretty much run everything except the air con (and maybe not a kettle) - or perhaps I have misunderstood this TIAV video tutorial?
@TripInAVan

Pretty much mate yeah. i think throw the 2600 watt inverter in and you'd run the lot except a/c. You might just have to use one appliance at a time.

Thx for the info. If you want to clean your coffee machine like you said it needed in a video. You just simply put enough water in it for two cycles with a teaspoon or so of cheap vinegar and put an empty pod into the machine. .Then use up the vinegar/water by cycling a couple of cups to empty the water tank on the machine . Then a couple of cycles of clean water with the empty pod in it. Just don't use Becs fav coffee cup to do it in otherwise she will not be happy. Use another mug which can be washed clean later.

Keep in mind there are two main types of solar panel design, series and parallel. A series panel will completely stop when even a tiny part of it is shaded but a parallel panel will still work minus the shaded area, so if half is shaded it will still give 50% of its power. Not 100% sure but i think the series panel are a bit more efficient so it is a trade off depending on which one you choose.
@petergreeneklee6652
2 жыл бұрын
Remember also that for series panels,all the panels must be the same electrical rating (eg 4x180watt). For parallel panels, different electrical panels can be combined (eg 3x180watt plus 1x100watt)

I would be interested in knowing how much power would charging the laptop use off-grid? I made the mistake last week of leaving the laptop on charge while off-grid from early afternoon till about 10pm at night while working on the laptop. About 11pm we lost all power with 0%. Had to wait till morning before we could recharge with the generator. A lesson learnt there.

We have a small poptop van, 2 people, 200Ah enerdrive battery and 360w of solar on roof. With 2 way electric fridge we can still cook electrically (amazingly convenient), on poor solar days we put out an additional 150W portable solar panel to help our fixed panels. Additional panel feeds batteries via its own MPPT controller. Portable panel can be relocated during the day to get more energy than equivalent fixed. Fall back for very bad solar days is to cook by gas instead of electric. If you have DC2DC Charger for car to charge caravan battery then even with zero solar the battery is adequately charged provided you are driving car/caravan for say minimum 3 hours per day.

The refrigerator in my caravan ran on 240volts at a powered site at night. The fridge remained cold without power for 8 hours, so charging it every night was enough to keep our food safe. It switched to 12 volt as an accessory off the car to van electrical plug. If we had no 240 volt powered site, the refrigerator could be run by lighting the gas. The fridge was 3 way powered. We were cooking with gas so we only needed a few battery lights. Do you need solar? Can the car engine charge the solar batteries for overnight power?
