Fantastic lesson! First time ever someone has explained this to me. I can do all single jumps, and single combo jumps but axel remains a distant dream.

i don’t have an ice rink near me anymore so i’ve spent TONS of time researching off ice jumps and tbh this is the best tutorial i’ve seen online that’s not from a paid program! so much more detail than the standard “jump, land on the other foot, and check out” tutorials lol. kudos!!!

It's such a great breakdown! But why nobody tells that you must also rotate your stepping left foot slightly to the left? :) makes huuuuuge difference because it naturally causes your body to rotate. The author is doing it on the video herself. Perhaps would be a great additional step to include 🤔

Hi Shelly, For the last two weeks, I have been practicing step by step the exercises from your videos about the Axel. It really help me immensely. Love 😍 your instructions. I'm getting more control & also higher thanks 🙏 to you. Thank You 😊 for all your work for helping us. Appreciate from my heart! You are the Best‼️ Lise 🎼 ⛸ 🦋 🤗

I am so happy I am able to help. I figured a video breaking each thing down for this jump will help everyone see why we do certain exercises. Sometimes with so many exercises, we get lost and then in turn we don't know what exactly to work on.

Thank you Shelly! This is super helpful to me as the rinks keep closing in my city. I'm new to axel and insufficient rotation is quite a struggle for me. Love from Hong Kong

You will get the rotation! It takes time but once you get all the steps and your body get used to it, you will have it!

When it comes to axel there are soooo many things that can go wrong and sometimes we dont know where things are going wrong and we dont know where to start. Or we might not understand a certain area. I am glad I was able to help! :)

Okay but I keep falling in front when attempting an axel, but once I follow these steps I don’t tend to fall and even went to 1 and 1/4 turns

Thank you. These are great pointers and a very well detailed and filmed video ❤🥺🫶❤ I am no longer with a coach but continue to skate and use the training my coach gave me before retiring. I appreciate the effort you put into this video trying to help skaters land it. 😢 Thank you!!! ❤

I just wonder, is axel has to be done to the left? For some reason I’ve never seen someone jump an axel to the right and for me personally when I work on my axel I find it easier to kick to the right.
@ShellySkates

Axel can be done either way depending on what kind of skater you are. Most skaters skate righty so that’s the direction you most commonly see. Lefty skaters rotate clockwise and they will jump the opposite way. Great example of a lefty skater is Ashley Wagner

If you jump lefty then everything will be opposite. So the kick through leg will be the left and you would step over from the right to the left.

Yes! I was so close to my axel and then it went to hell. I followed the instructions given in your video and my axel felt better than it ever had. The BEST advice…not putting my weight over my left leg until jumping up to the right hip rotation. It was amazing how much faster I spun without even trying! Thank you!!

Yes! When it comes to adding a rotation to a jump it’s pretty much the same just with increasing quickness to get a good snap for the rotation and plenty of height!
