I used to have a BMW F650 GS and the seat on that was the same, BMW even made a "comfort" seat for it which was one of the first things I bought. After many mods it was an excellent bike. Looked up the ferry and two passengers with car over a grand!

Fantastic adventure and thanks so much for sharing. I would suggest a couple of recommendations for gear: 1) Tool kit which you have already used on the bike to fix and maintain things (most stock tool kits are not very good); 2) Tire plug/patch kit with CO2 canisters; 3) spare spark plug(s); 3) Disposable gloves for those greasy repairs; 4) small med kit; 5) Microfiber clothing (not cotton); 6) Head and/or helmet-mounted LED light; 7) Zip-ties and duct tape!
@harrysgarage
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, should have mentioned spare kits but I was beginning to think I'd made the video a bit too long already, hence why all those items you correctly point out didn't get a mention. Interestingly, the Honda XL600LM had tubeless tyres fitted as standard, so we had a plug repair kit for it should the worst happen. I have used mosses as well but don't like using them on heavier bikes and when there's a fair bit of road miles to do

Great stuff! I live in Madrid and ride motorbike on roads only (great secondary roads around, as in whole of Spain), but I know from my MTB experience that the laws and regulations for any other activity than walking is heavily regulated and you can have some unpleasant encounters with law enforcement. These laws differ from one region to another but they do tend to forbid any motor vehicle activity (I heard that Catalonia is a bit more relaxed, but Madrid is heavy on this). Glad you went there off-season as this probably saved you from some unpleasant encounters with the rangers or overly zealous walkers... Picos de Europa is a gem, I am surprised you were able to traverse on bikes as it's a national park - but all the better as it's so spectacular. I see you're planning to go back in November - be prepared for cold weather and rain and possibly snow - these mountains are all snowed over in winter and snow lasts well into April high up. If you're ever in a car or road bike, road CA-184 and CL-627 are a good recommendation. And for food Vicente Campo restaurant in Espinama is a treat! Enjoy and thanks for sharing your passion! PS: This area is known for cheese, make sure you get a cheese platter that includes the famous Cabrales!

Interesting, we didn't have hassle from anyone and saw very few walkers out and about. I always slow down if we do meet someone, though, and it helps to be in a small group at moments like that too. Saw a few rangers/police but they didn't seem interested in us, which was nice. Picos de Europa was amazing, a real find on our way back to catch the ferry that evening.

Talking about the KTM seat.. you can take the cover off and re-shape her by carving away some of the foam and then re-covering. Fairly easy job for your average upholsterer just need to decide how much foam to remove and from where. Of course once you've cut into her that's it so need to have a think where she's uncomfortable. Did the same to my Ninja 650 and the seat was a big improvement.

KLIM Mojave pants are even better than the Dakar pants; 800D Cordura and a bit of leather around abrasion areas (outside of legs, seat, hips), and super breathable mesh everywhere else.

Excellent stuff! Santander - often the start-point for many, is in itself a very interesting place to stay. Most people just head straight off for their destination; several years ago, on my big Euro Road Poutle trip (BMV 1200cc) we got stuck in Santander for a few days due to my buddy's bike breaking down (caught fire) just off the ferry! Spent a delightful 3 days exploring Santander and surrounds...before we commenced on our way down toward Portugal...where an accident ended my biking days. I still miss it. Anyhoo, great vid...tough stuff to do but fun...and such beautiful scenery! Cheers!

Some very good tips, Harry. I used to do a lot of off-roading when I lived in Spain and would recommend slim soft panniers, as opppsed to carrying the luggage too high. Also, gel inserts and a re-upholstering job on the KTMs would have transformed the comfort. My friend did this to his Husqvarna 701 enduro and he felt reborn after riding it. Looks great too, and all for £25 (here in Colombia, that is!)
