As a Yooper, it's honestly kind of refreshing for someone to bring up the economic and demographic issues in the UP while also doing so well showing the natural beauty and tranquility of the area. Most videos on the UP don't talk about the poverty and lack of opportunities up there. If you'd like to dive more into the economic issues and history of the UP, you should also check out some places in the western UP if you have a chance. Some examples that come to mind would be Ishpeming, K.I. Sawyer, Ironwood, Menominee, and especially the towns of Calumet and Laurium in the Keweenaw. These places have experienced industries leaving, massive population decline, and blight (though they've done an okay job of removing blight over the past decade or so). There are also tons of amazing scenic areas around these places, especially in the Keweenaw with Brockway Mountain and Eagle Harbor.

At this point in my KZitem journey I’ve made a lot of videos… there are a lot of people from all around who get offended over me pointing out any kind of factual flaw in their area, so I can respect it when people can admit the flaws of their region. - I’m from the Detroit area, I can admit that Detroit has big time issues that outweigh the positives despite it being my favorite large city. The UP, combined with northern lower Michigan, is one of my favorite places in the world. It’d be difficult to make a living there however because of the economics. I’ll be back for more videos on other places within the UP for sure. I plan on going to many of the towns that you’ve mentioned.

Another good video. Thank you for stopping in Manistque. I live 4 hrs from there in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and have been through there many times on way to bridge. Have even stayed there at Hotel which is right across the street from the water. The one thing you didn’t mention or possibly not know about is there is a cool, unique tour spot called Fayette which is like a 15 minute drive to southern tip of area. It has buildings from 1800’s there.

So strange seeing this as a Manistique native lol. Super interesting seeing someone on the outside discuss so much of my own cities history and statistics. And you hit most everything on the head. Youth can't stand this place, most kids leave to big cities for college, most usually stay there after. Not a bad town by any means, but unfortunately not enough care goes into keeping it nice enough to keep future generations here. I myself plan on leaving as soon as I'm able to. There are quite a few abandoned buildings, most get abandoned quicker than they get replaced. Could be an amazing town with some more love

Good video. Man, I don’t know what to do to help places like Manistique. Even if an industry moved into town again and paid really well, I feel like it’s difficult to convince people to move essentially to the middle of nowhere, not close to any other cities, without any major events or activities, without many stores or restaurants, etc. It’s just a tall order unless you really enjoy isolation and nearly living off the grid. I grew up in central Michigan in a small town of only 1,800 people when I left, and I sometimes do feel bad about having left, but there were just no opportunities and no way to pursue my interests, and it drove me nuts growing up. But I really do wish smaller places like Manistique had a way to thrive.

Manistique has actually seen a bit of a rebound in population recently. Talking with newer residents the remote job field is definitely a factor. That's why I moved here myself. My wife was a returning native to Manistique. The city certainly has is problems but the city has been making a lot of efforts recently to develop a new master plan and update its codes to allow more options for land developers. I am hopeful that the city is moving from a dying comercial community to something more realistic for the future.

My folks used to take us to the UP every August for 1 month of vacation (during the late '50s, '60s and early '70s). We stayed in a cabin near Point aux Barque on the Garden Peninsula south of Thompson (that's another back road trip for you to take from Thompson to Garden then Fayette State Park). We shopped and attended church in Manistique. It was larger then and had more shopping and small businesses. I have a lot of memories of the place. Many thanks for driving around town and showing what it looks like today.

I went to the old Manistique High School in the early 70s. Lived on Indian Lake three miles outside of town. It was a hard partying, and roudy town back then. A bit less now, which is a good trend most places in the U.S. now. For reference, the town of Munising, about thirty five miles to the north, was in the Guinness Book for most alcohol consumption per Capita, town under 5,000 population, in the U.S. I'm sure we in Manistique we're not far behind!

Kitch-Iti-kipi is a michigan state park. there is a fee to visit the state parks. you can pay on a daily basis or on a yearly basis. it's $9 per day or $34 for out of state people. in-state people it's $17 or $12 (through a license plate pass). manistique is typical of most areas in in the upper peninsula in terms of beauty, low crime rate and low employment rates, along with relitviely high poverty rate. younger people leave because of lack of unemployment. they tend to come back and a lot of people will stay in the upper peninsula because of the beauty and that they like the area. with "remote" work, the upper peninsula is a perfect area to live in because of all the opportunities for out door recreation that we offer. when it comes to jobs, most "yoopers" think of mining and timber, with tourism as the only types of jobs. it would be nice to see more diversity in job industries in the upper peninsula. by the way i'm from marquette. (north central part of the upper peninsula).

At the 10:12 point - in those trees - I met my (now -ex) wife in 1982, smoking cigarettes before classes started at Manistique High School. The 'Malt Shop', now abandoned on Cedar St, was a hangout for the (us) hooligans to play pinball and video games, eat a burger & fries and score a bit of pot. The town has slowly degraded over the decades and it's sad, I loved growing up there...the nostalgia has carried over, however, as I now have 5 pins and 5 video games from that era in my rec room...

My daughter (Texan born and raised) moved to Calumet, MI two years ago. I drove from Texas to Calumet in late October to visit her. It's beautiful country, but to cold for me (mid 40's during the day while I was there). The altitude is much higher and I had difficulty breathing (COPD). Otherwise, I would gladly live there. Drove through WI to get to Calumet and drove in the other direction home in order to cross the Mackinac Bridge. I hope to visit again in the future (Spring or Summer).

I am a "well educated" suburban Detroit resident who earned a good living off the more modern economy. Your condemnation of politicians and thoughtless policies is an ignorant and arrogant way to cast blame on someone else. We are all part of the same economic machine that marches on through time. Towns like Manistique owe their rich history to the resource extraction industries of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It does not matter which political parties are in charge in Lansing... those days are behind us and aging communities like Manistique have to figure out their future based on future opportunities. I'm quite certain that Roi Danton and lazy RRR are agreeing to cast blame... albeit on different individuals... none of whom can change the economic realities of a 21st century economy. Set aside the political blame game, recognize the very real assets this community has, and think long and hard about the opportunities the future holds. Towns like Manistique could be heaven on earth to a select group of motivated people. figure out who they are and give them a reason to be part of your future.

Never heard the term “hill jack”. until I watched your videos. You might consider me one, I’m from St. Johns. That’s just North of Lansing. I’ve heard of hillbillies, but not hill jacks…is that even a word? My cousin grew up in Detroit. He called me up one day and told me he was ‘moving up my way”. Then he said he bought a place in Ferndale! I replied: that’s still Detroit! He informed me I was wrong, since it was the other side of 8 mile😂😂😂 Okay, I used to travel for work, and I was in up-state New York. I was talking to a lady about renting a room, and the first thing she asked was: “you aren’t from the city, are you?” She meant NYC. She was suspicious of anybody from the city because in her experience, they all tried to take advantage and weren’t reliable. I explained that I was from rural Michigan and felt the same about people from Detroit😂. You see, there’s a reason people don’t want to live in cities. You mentioned it talking about Marysville…low crime and better schools …so most people in Detroit are armed to the teeth😙 Actually, we are too. Different reasons though.
@ChrisHarden

Take out the space in between hill and jack and you’ve got yourself a word. Haha. It’s all meant for fun. Funny story about your cousin. Just curious though, how do you feel about people from Oakland and Macomb county, and even suburban Wayne County? How about Washtenaw County? These places aren’t necessarily Detroit, but they’re definitely not rural. Most people in “Metro Detroit” or the “Detroit area” don’t actually live in Detroit these days. Washtenaw County isn’t metro Detroit but it is in the Detroit TV market.

My two cents worth. Judging by the lack of car dealerships, realtors, for sale signs but having 100yr old homes, one small bar and a Ben Franklins as a downtown anchor store across the street from a Hospice to die at tells me there is no money in this town. Young folks leaving and old folks living out their years makes this appear bleak. No need to even mention the twenty foot snow drifts on the way.

Um, what? They have a Ford dealership, and four real estate agencies in town. There are at least three or four bars right in town plus some scattered throughout the county. Not sure what hospice is across the road from the Ben Franklin. It's also worth noting that this video barely showed anything that is along the highway (including the aforementioned car dealership, a small casino, a fairly recently built RV park, a full size grocery store, et cetera.)
