If you want a change from the buffets at the resorts, El CACIQUE is an excellent restaurant. It is about a block or two up the hill from the resorts, and right across from it is a house which sells all the same souvenirs you can find anywhere else in Cuba. Prices are reasonable for North Americans paying in US or CAD dollars, if we were at home they would be cheap. The prices in Cuban Pesos are stupidly low for us at the unofficial exchange rate.
If you are planning on bringing pounds Sterling you might want to change some into US dollars before you leave for Cuba, as here they are valuing the pound as equal to the Euro. Euros do get a higher unofficial exchange rate than the US Dollar though, so I suggest bringing which ever gets you more per pound back home. Same goes for Canadians, even though it will cost you to buy US dollars at home, you will make or save money in Cuba by paying in it, or converting some to Cuban Pesos for eating and drinking off resort.
You can change money at the much lower official rate at your resort, or ask employees at the resort if they know anyone who will exchange at the unofficial rate, or your tour guide or driver if you book a private trip in a classic car. In Havana people will come up to you. Show them the exchange rate for that day from el toque on your phone, and start haggling your rate of exchange with them. I got 250 Cuban Pesos per US dollar, el toque showed 270 so I lost a bit, but made way more than the official rate of 150 Cuban Pesos per US Dollar at the resort. Always pay very close attention to the Cuban bills, 100 bill looks a lot like the 1000, and always count it back, twice in front of them. Do not exchange more than you think you will need as it is very hard to change back to USD. There is not much worth buying and very little of it on resort with Cuban Pesos. Off resort it is the best currency for wining and dining in my opinion. It can also get you cheap smokes and rum from some stores nearby and in towns/cities.
