Even now (in most cases) I still don’t understand running special sets over physical ones if the pokemon has higher attack. I think the most ridiculous cases are special dragonite and special Iron Valiant. Iron Valiant gets close combat, Spirit Break, and a lot of good physical coverage. And Dragonite has dragon dance, outrage or dragon claw (I do understand not wanting to use outrage but it is really good if used late game) and earthquake If anyone has answers to any of these (especially valiant, dragonite is more understandable because it’s stab moves are either weaker than draco meteor or way too situational) then I am really curious why the special variants are so common

Bulky Ground is such a necessary archetype for balance teams. Part of the reason for the success of Bulky Lando T and Chomp is the is the synergy between Toxic and EQ. Toxic whittles away all mons except Steels and Poisons which are hit super effectively by EQ making for a nasty combination. Combine this with them running bulk and rocks, they stick around till late game where the checks are sufficiently weakened and the rest of the team has to bear the brunt of stab neutral EQs off their still monstrous attacks even without investment while they provide crucial defensive utility. Groudon is also a good example for this because to this day it's SD/Bulk Up sets are considered impossible to truly counter in Ubers. Basically EdgeQuake + one of Heat Crash/Overheat/Toxic is able to kill every single check in the damn game. One set that epitomizes this and my personal favorite is Defensive Bulk Up set that checks Zekrom, Zygarde, Necrozma Dusk Mane and even is able to withstand 2 Choice Band Dragon Ascents from Rayquaza but still able kill Yveltal at +2 with Edge. This way you are able to get a great Phys Def wall and simultaneously one of the best offensive mons in Ubers. Ttar also kind of takes advantage of EQ + Toxic on his SpD sets but he is far bulkier specially and able to spread further chip damage with Sand Storm, Rocks and even hits flying types hard with Stone Edge to discourage Defog. It's one of the most underrated mons in OU. That set is so good at spreading chip that it is even better at making progress than even Banded sets and has so much crucial defensive utility to boot. Imo, you are using Ttar wrong if you are using it offensively. Lastly, I am surprised that Melmetal wasn't on the list, that mon with 140 base attack and 140 base power stab move runs SpD investment on base 65. Again this is thanks to the power of Toxic + EQ with the many resists afforded by being a Steel type. That set actually is even considered Melmetal's best set right now. So the basic conclusion is that offensive mons can run defensive sets so they can provide defensive utility while still being offensively useful as they get through they checks with chip rather than raw power which is more effective a lot of the times. This offensive capability is why they are used over straight up walls.

I mean you can use that set kinda to surprise your opponent, so it's a fun kinda gimmick, even though it's not as good as the defensive set. Especially band ice fang/stone edge kill a lot of mons that are supposed to be able to just sit in front of it.

No mention of Buzzwole? At first, you'd expect Buzzwole to run primarily offensive sets with its high Attack and low Sp. Def, but then you look at its stats again and see 107 HP + 139 Defense. Its Bug / Fighting type-combo gives great resistances to Dark, Grass, Ground, Fighting, and U-turn / Bug. Couple all that with Roost and strong attacks like CC, EQ, Stone Edge, and recovery moves off both its STABs, and you have yourself a great offensive wall

I know you are trying to keep the mood light and accessible for a wide audience but I think it comes across as a little over the top and the editing at time detracts from the really good info you're providing in your narration. I say this with only love as I've been subbed to you forever and just want to give you honest feedback so you can continue to grow. Back when off-type megas were allowed in Monotype, SpDef Megazard-X was arguably the best defensive pokemon in the game for MonoFlying because it gave an electric resistance & ice neutrality and its crippling ground weakness was covered by literally the entire rest of your team. Plus, because mono-flying as a type hated rocks so much you ran 2+ defoggers which allowed it to constantly get in without fear of stealth rocks.

Astonished Kommo-o didn't make the video. Despite losing Z moves, Kommo-o has had such a big glow up this gen which can be owed in large part to Dragon/Fighting offering such a spectacular and coveted array of resistences that more than make up for its quad Fairy weakness. Same thing can go the other way around. For instance, despite only 94 base attack, Ferrothorn can hit extremely hard, especially if it's an extremely rare Curse set. Another example I like to use is Toxapex in Pokebilities (every pokemon has all their abilities active at once) where, without investment, Venoshock on a poisoned Clefable with max SpDef, either 2HKOs or comes close to 2HKOing. But 99/100 I use Band, mainly now because it's so rarely used anymore.. it's almost as if people have been using the newer variants that much that they've totally forgotten what a 145 base power banded EQ is capable of from time to time. Probably does more work now than it ever did because people stay in with certain mons because they have become so accustomed to sp.def/def Lando that the idea of it being an offensive threat becomes somewhat removed.

This video is a great history of competitive offense. But I think there’s more to it. When you think about it in numbers, it makes sense. In games with stats and ways to modify them, you have the option to play to the strengths of a character or shore up it’s weaknesses. In Pokémon, you have multiple ways. But the first that comes to mind is EVs. These increase your stats by a fixed number. A fixed number will add a higher relative percent to a stat that’s weaker at base. Compare that with raising your stats in battle which is always a fixed percent. This will add higher numbers to the stats that are stronger by default. And by far the most common way to boost your stats is by using moves. As you said, having the defensive resources enables your Pokémon to use the moves that raise it’s stats. But having defense EVs invested along with protect and/or a healing move does not make a defensive set. You’ve just used the tools available to create better opportunities to use your stronger offenses for longer. None of the “defensive” sets you mentioned happened to include boosting moves that raise defensive stats. That would be a waste.

This is called by some as the Rampardos Theorem. It’s the idea that power isn’t everything, and you either need to be able to outspeed or need to tank hits in order to be useful. It’s obviously named after Rampardos, who has enough raw power to nuke anything, but its other stats suck so badly that it’s still one of the worst sweepers (and Pokémon in general) in history.

No mention of "dimishing returns" when putting EVs onto a pokemon? Every 4 ev points we get 1 desired stat point no matter your base, so for extreme example an alakazam with maxed out sp. Atk goes from 306 to 369 ~ 21% incease, physical attacking zam goes from 136 to 199 ~46% incrase.

Which is the same principle that makes it so every Blissey and Chansey (or like 99.8% at least) run fully physically def, because yes, their defense suck, but the EV is static so their defense goes up A TON making them actually not that frail on the physical side when factoring their HP, whereas investing on their Spe Def is not nearly as valuable not just because of that but also because you simply don't need to invest to be the best special sponge ever, but you need some way to not die to every physical attack Imo, that would have been a better example to use than Physical Alakazam (not like I don't like a Good old CB Focus Punch +Trick Zam, that shit is my favorite Alakazam set in ADV, it's still Specially offensive mainly though but the set is still really fun even if it requires 5000 IQ to play)

@@sephikong8323 yeah chansey would be a better pick since she actually runs sets with evs in def(at least she did before the powercreep happened)while zam isn't going to be a premium physical attacker any time soon. Still my point was that some Mons don't have to spec into things they are already good at, special attacking ttar or salamance don't run atk ev's yet their physical attacks still sting enough to the point that you can't just shrug then off.

Now the question is what does Shedinja count as? Is it terrible bulk because of the single hitpoint? Or is it phenomenal bulk because of the thirteen immunities?

Love these information dump vid Joey!. As someone who enjoys watching and casually playing competitively, it's nice to know all this to give insight in other ways that teams and pokemon can be trained. Keep 'em coming!

I like videos like this. Obviously a big reason why I tune into your channel is the showdown gameplay where you're just vibing and bantzing but every now and then it's nice to see polished analysis content like this too. I wouldn't be surprised if this video is more favored by the KZitem algorithm too lol.

Before I watch let me guess; not as big of an advantage trying to boost your ATK so boosting the defense will give you a bigger bang for your buck, right?

As I see it pokemon have natural and invested traits, and sometimes we put them both in the same alley to make it extra strong or put them in different alleys if we can sacrifice having the same alley strength
