This is a long-winded encouragement to Matt Collville prompted by his comparison between himself and Critical Role. I love Matt Collville, and by extension I know that I will love MCDM Productions. I've followed you since the 3rd Running the Game video, and I've backed your kickstarter back when it still only had $100,000-ish. I think that gives me enough credit as a fan who wants you to succeed. However, as I watched you teach me how to run my game I've noticed that you are a big fan of Critical Role yourself. As am I. In fact, I've watched Critical Role even before I began watching you. Anyways, I've noticed in your videos that while you are good friends with them and also love their work, there has always been a self-deprecating way that you refer to yourself in comparison to them. This was also painfully obvious when you posted your video on making a future stream (this was before your kickstarter success), and in so doing made a few comments about yourself in comparison to Critical Role's success. I also remember you jokingly apologizing to your players in one of your live-game streams for continuing to play despite your streaming ambitions. And it makes sense to want to compare yourself with Critical Role in some areas, such as the field of live-streaming, as they've done it first (making them the start of the great D&D renaissance, alongside WotC's awesome work). This, plus their roleplaying and Mercer's DMing makes it the most popular (though I'm not quite yet ready to call them the best) D&D streamable show/podcast. However, you're so quick to self-deprecate yourself. You have a lot of amazing content, you have the single-best most successful kickstarter in the realm of tabletop roleplaying, with the amazing John Wick as a close second. You're one of the most experienced, wisest, and most titillatingly beardical DM the youtube world has ever known. You are also an awesome game designer, possibly making your adjustments to the game the most noteworthy. I don't think there hasn't been a suggestion you have made that I haven't personally written down. I know have at least two notebooks full of awesome stuff. You're also an amazing author, one that I would put up there with Brandon Sanderson, Patrick Rothfuss, and my favourite authors (James S.A. Corey and George R.R. Martin). In your specific field of expertise, total body of work, and skillset, you have NO competitor. There is no one who is a close second to you. That is why when you joked about Critical Role having a bigger office than you, as well as joking about giving up, I was off-put because I'm worried that you forgot what you brought to the table. Your work has and will continue to inspire my game, thousands of other games, and, multiplicatively, the games of their children. You, Great Bearded One, are a monster of your own category. That said, I'm looking forward to your upcoming stream and your Stronghold pdf. From one gaming nerd to another.

Friend of mine used to run a gaming store in the 90s. He wanted to use a spare back room for D&D. I always thought it would be cool to paint that room like the interior of a tavern with all kinds of patrons, so the gaming table looked like one of the tables in the tavern. The players a group of adventurers drinking and talking about adventures.

Hi Matt...for backdrop, I think what would go over best would be some version of whatever people could imagine themselves having the most fun playing in. I think big elaborate setpieces or logos or something wouldn't word nearly as well as some of the really awesome game room setups I've seen. I'm thinking the interior of the sort of inn that adventurers typically meet in - wood paneled walls, faux candle sconces, maybe a big fireplace with a monitor to display a loop of a fire and a mantle for choice trinkets to be displayed, campaign related things like maps on the walls, maybe a bar with some casks? The sort of place someone would build if you gave him a hundred thousand bucks to build a place to play D&D.

Thanks for the update. Personally I don't care if you have a fancy background, you were given money to get a book published. Mainly so I think focus on that and save money where you can. You just never know how long things might take or problems that might happen. So having a treasury as full as you can is always good.

HI Matt, When you get a chance could you do a vid on Sense Motive. I am a GM and but want to know how to deal with PC's with sense motive and plotting. My main problem is how do you deal with PC's getting too much information from NPC's that may potentially be trying to betray or hide something from them too early. Players are a (justifiably in my case) paranoid bunch and are constantly probing with ten foot polls and cross examining any NPC that they may come into contact with. This can spoil more slow burn plot set ups and dramatic reveals/encounters. Currently I am just not using Sense motive type skills (I run WHFRP 2ed and am going to switch to Zweihander - which you should check out if you like those style systems!). But, if my PC's find out I am afraid they will a) just be more paranoid as it is a serious flag to them if I tell them I'm not letting them roll it. or b) be disappointed/feel unfairly treated if I deny it to them. At least in some instances. I hope all is going well with the book and the company and am looking forward to seeing it all come together. Peace and Solidarity. Al
