Luke, CPR is always done on a person with no pulse. If a person is not breathing due to an airway obstruction and is conscious then the heimlich maneuver is done, if the person goes unresponsive, even if they have a pulse, you start CPR. This is because compressions are more forceful and can still force the object out, also if there is an airway obstruction the persons pulse will not be there for long.

According to the class I'm taking, it was because the time taken to do the rescue breaths allows the blood pressure to drop dangerously and survival rates were higher in hands-only CPR groups than combined CPR + rescue breath groups.

Thank you. This was the first thing that went through my mind. This should be stated, and additionally added that the chin should be tilted back to open the airway to make sure air is coming through, in addition to checking for a pulse. Someone could collapse for an incredible amount of reasons, not one of which being cardiac arrest.

look, listen, and feel. If you place your ear a couple inches from their mouth you can listen and feel for breaths, look toward their chest while you do this and see if their chest is rising and falling. Also, if they have no pulse then they will not be breathing either. Check both though, just to be sure. An obvious sign that you can spot as you approach will be ashen grey skin, they will literally look dead. hope this helps

Any attempt at CPR is better than no attempt. Hands-Only CPR performed by a bystander has been shown to be as effective as conventional CPR with mouth-to-mouth breaths in the first few minutes of an out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest. Conventional CPR may be better than Hands-Only CPR for certain victims, though, such as infants and children, adults who are found in cardiac arrest (whom you did not see collapse) or victims of drowning or collapse due to breathing problems.

no. you are working the cardio-pulmonary system not just the heart. air contains about 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen and 1% other stuff like argon and co2, of that 21% about 5-6% is used by the body the rest is breathed back out again. this is why if you hold your breath you dont immediately pass out. cpr forces blood around the body and, even if you're not breathing, it still gets oxygen to the vital organs by redistributing what is left.

"If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, don't be afraid to try it!" Right, so don't bother assessing for a pulse, if anyone collapses for any reason get right down and start cracking ribs. Thanks AHA!

The AHA talks to real people who tried to help, and real emergency room staff. They change the recommendations based on what works. People who needed CPR weren't getting it because the helper wasn't positive they didn't feel a heartbeat. It's safer to err on the other side. People were afraid of not pushing hard enough, so were being ineffective. It's better for most people to overdo it. And, yes, ribs and cartilage breaks. We were warned to expect that. Yes, with breathing is better, especially if the original problem is lack of air, such as with drowning or asphyxiation. However, circulating the oxygen that is still in the blood is better than nothing, especially if you don't have energy to do both. (CPR with breathing is hard!) It's still best to take a class and keep up to date. They change the instructions as they learn more. The instructor can help you adapt if you can't do it the normal way. A class will also include legal issues. In most jurisdictions, do your best at the time. That's better for them than doing nothing. The class will cover consent and relative risk. Many groups will also support you in court, even if, in the moment, you can't remember everything you were taught.

Yeah, not sure why the video neglected to mention checking for a pulse and breathing, that's kind of an important step before you begin thumping on someone's chest. Also, don't bother counting reps, bust em out as fast as you can, odds are you won't reach 100 reps per minute. You'll likely break ribs if you do it right. For those that were asking about breaths, AHA eliminated rescue breathing from CPR for laymen. If you insist on doing rescue breaths anyway, the current standard is 30 and 2.

You are right! I did research on this. They said the reason why they used to say DON'T do it on a beating heart (and all the stories about it causing it to stop) was to get the first responder to check vitals first. I read where a cardiac surgeon over in the UK said, " Conclusion: you can hit a beating heart pretty hard with no serious effects. If you do nothing with a non-beating heart your patient is dead." It's a pity that all the diseases going around prevents mouth 2 mouth..sad. 4give me?

Great video. Before you criticize - TAKE A CLASS ! ! ! Hopefully, someone else will be more generous in helping those of you (or someone you care about) who don't care to help others. There has never been a successful law suit in reference to CPR. Ribs break if the compressions are deep enough to jumpstart the heart - healing from broken ribs is better than dying. Compressions are much more important than breaths. Hoping the childish comments are an attempt at humor. Take a class!

You should probably check the latest AHA guidelines. From what I've read the recommendation for untrained bystanders is to just try to wake them and if they're not obviously breathing then just do compressions, exactly as depicted in this video. Trained non-professionals might give breaths, but would not check for a pulse. Trained professionals check for a pulse for up to 10 seconds, and if they don't find one by then they are supposed to assume that there isn't one. I'm not a doctor...

The Official 2012 Hands-Only CPR Instructional Video! Finally, a valid use for disco! If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, call 9-1-1 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of the classic disco song "Stayin' Alive." CPR can more than double a person's chances of survival, and "Stayin' Alive" has the right beat for Hands-Only CPR.

Actually checking the pulse is obsolete. Airway is more important. Think about a situation where the victim just collapsed. If he isn't breathing (brain-damage, aspiration etc.) he might still have a pulse for some time but due to the o2 insufficiency not for long. Additionally, it takes at least 10 seconds to evaluate the pulse properly (my experience as a paramedic). Time that someone with no medical training should spent on cpr ;)

Dehydration has noticeable precursors, warning signs that lead up to the event of collapse. So do most things. Someone suddenly collapsing is a strong indicator of a sudden loss of blood flow to the brain. So the most probable thing, keeping in mind you only have seconds to react before the chance of saving the person starts to greatly diminish; is that they are having a heart attack. Most people including myself aren't doctors, so basic, short, and memorable beats nothing.

These are new standards! From 2012. This is exactly what has to be done. no the sequence is C-A-B: Circulation--Airway-Breathing. And you have to check the pulse ONLY if you are medic or paramedic, If you are just a first aid provider, no pulse checking, UNRESPONSIVE start CPR. new standards from AHA--American Heart Association.

I'm an ER nurse. If you see someone down, please DO NOT START CHEST COMPRESSIONS. First, try to wake the person who is down. No response? Call 911 then check the carotid pulse (put 2 fingers between the adams apple and neck muscle). No pulse? begin compressions. Has a pulse? Check breathing. Not breathing? provide mouth to mouth rescue breaths every 6-8 seconds. Recheck pulse every 2 minutes until ambulance arrives.
@schladmingman

If you're an ER nurse....or a paramedic, or a doctor, or other professional, then YES. BUT, this is not what we're talking about here. Hands-only CPR is compressions only and was developed for lay responders who would otherwise just stay away. I'm sure you'd agree that "some CPR is better than no CPR," right? Well, do some checking and you'll see that this method does not replace compressions and breaths (which are still taught in basic CPR classes), nor does it replace checking respiration and pulse (for professionals). Something for everyone, okay?

You're not supposed to be trying to push the heart through the back of the rib cage. If you hear cartilage, ribs or a sternum cracking/breaking you're obviously applying far to much pressure than required to make the heart pump blood and/or applying pressure in the wrong location.

Err, conventional CPR is better than hands-only... period. Hands-only relies on the air that is already in the victim's lungs, while if you man up and use mouth to mouth, you can keep a person alive for as long as you have the stamina to keep doing it. Unless there's somthing really, really wrong with the victim's mouth, man up and do mouth to mouth, since it's the best option to keep him alive long enough for paramedics to arrive (AND for someone to grab an AED, if there is one nearby)
@nathanschnelle7235
11 жыл бұрын
And why in the hell would you report the video? The national standards come from the American Heart Association. If you are untrained, finding a pulse may be harder than you think. This is the new way to get citizens to start CPR as early as possible. If there is no response, and no signs of life, start CPR. Its as simple as that. Just giving compressions circulates blood throughout the body and keeps organs supplied with oxygen until help arrives.
