Scott covering bass is a sign that it’s good to have someone who pick up the bass line when the main bass person is singing the lead.

Matt's voice is very pleasant and he has a good high end. That Scott is taking such a wonderful bass line is amazing. What is missing since Avi left is that chest pounding sub-woofer presence. That is not to say this is not great as well, just different from previously. BTW Kirsten and Mitch make a phenomenal brass section. Kevin is as solid as always.
@hannahmclaughlin348

People need to stop comparing the two. I could NOT see Avi doing this...it's too theatrical for him, as he's more of a classical bass. Matt was perfect for this. They are two different singers, but both were good. Matt fits right in, and PTX is still doing well. He's not trying to be anyone else but him.
@ChibiChula
3 жыл бұрын
They're just different. Yeah, I miss Avi and always will but Matt is really doing very well. I think what you're really missing is simply Avi's overtone singing, which is what mostly gave them the more genuine club sound, almost seeming like there were six people in the group at times. 😅

Pentatonix do their arrangements themselves with Ben Bram! They've won TWO GRAMMYS for Best Arrangement! There's a behind the scenes video for this, btw. kzitem.info/news/bejne/lp1322SaoWebY2k On their arranging process, from an interview: MC: How is material chosen? Who does the arranging and how do you take a well-established pop hit and make it a Pentatonix tune? Hoying: We pick a song with a great melody that we can agree on. Five of us sit in a circle. Kevin starts with a beat and Matt will sing the bassline. Then we improvise the lead and backgrounds over that and record voice memos to capture those raw moments. It’s really messy, super sloppy. We give those improvisations to *Ben Bram* , who translates everything to paper with all the little details and mistakes. He takes what we come up with organically and creates a structured arrangement that is “singalongable.” Then we work out the other details later. I consider “Hallelujah” our best arrangement ever and it was the biggest song in our history. We sang through it only one time before Ben cleaned it up. Mitch Grassi: It’s a crazy process with crazy chemistry. We put a phone in the middle of that circle and stumble through the song, make up parts as we go along, and then everything has to be cleaned up so it sounds listenable. www.musicconnection.com/pentatonix/ During COVID social-distancing situation, they arrange online via Zoom. Ben would screen-share the music sheet of the arrangement and members of Pentatonix would tell him or "sing" him their ideas. Here are some videos showing them in the arranging process: * Arranging "Happy" (at 3:23): kzitem.info/news/bejne/pX53qW1rm4mfnJw * Arranging "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" (at 1:55): kzitem.info/news/bejne/uaaf0WF6jqyIn6w * A compilation of them recording/arranging: kzitem.info/news/bejne/uZiutqKYfGunoaA * A podcast of Ben Bram (their co-arranger, who won two Grammys with them) talking about how he and Pentatonix arrange together: player.fm/series/recording-a-cappella-with-danny-ozment/ben-bram-part-2-the-pentatonix-process There are also two videos where they demonstrate how they typically do arrangements: * "Can't Sleep Love" with Avi: kzitem.info/news/bejne/0oKo3J97gYl9n4Y * "New Rules x Are You That Somebody" with Matt: kzitem.info/news/bejne/yoSX0qiugmemp2k

LOL. It's so hard not to compare songs between the groups. And I love bass singers that are versatile and talented enough to have a higher register as well, which all of the ones we're listening to seem to have (in spades). The boys were right; there were several key changes as well as tempo changes in this one. Good ears, boys! And Dennis, I loved your description of a jazzy feel to their version. It was almost theatrical in a wonderful Seuss-y way, which shouldn't be surprising given their covers in the Wizard of Ahhhs but VoicePlay usually tends to lean more toward the theatrics than Pentatonix. Not so in this version. Kudos on exposing your kids to different musical genres and challenging them to recognize musical types and the intricacies of musicality. They're learning a lot and picking up on even subtle differences that I'm not sure I'd have known at their ages, even in the short time I've been watching your reactions. Well done, boys! Keep 'em coming.
