It’s a tough call between the original, the Disco Citizens, and this version. All are good in their own way and I wouldn’t normally say that adding a vocal to a great instrumental would normally work but what Anthony Pappa created with his bootleg mix here for the ‘97 version is quite an inspired piece of work. Luckily (or engineered that way?) Chicane and Power Circle we’re both on Edel at the time so it was easy to get the vocals cleared for release.

@@djemmay That album was part of my soundtrack when I backpacked through India in 97..... I was in awe of that bit of mixing.....annoyingly I lost that 1 disc of the 4 that it was on......its been deleted unfortunately as it was such a good set especially as Dave Seaman was kind of under rated at the time ..... good memories and there are not many people who know exactly what we're referring to - thank you for helping me reminisce - I loved the sound Dave Seaman was into at that time......I think a lot of people looked past him because of Brothers in Rhythm and didn't see him as a proper house DJ. Iistened to a set he did at a UK festival called the Big Chill and he was just as good live. This was before it was all done for you and only had a set of 1210s and a mixer. I know what you can do now as a DJ is in a completely different level but for me mixing properly with just your ears and a set of decks done properly is still very special. I'll never forget Carl Cox on the terrace at Space on a Sunday afternoon playing on three decks - scratching vocals into a mix from the third deck and making a sound better than a lot of modern Djs do with all the assistance they now have......same goes for Sacha at Pushka in 1992 mixing the brass disk vocal over Congress 40 miles and Whitney Houston a capella over the top of Leftfield Not Forgotten........

@@timcasey5835 You’re very lucky to have experienced such amazing moments... these are of legend in dance music circles for people that know. I’ve heard of a lot of people’s experiences but not been fortunate to have been there myself . Mixing with vinyl is a true art and certain people have more of a knack for it than others. I was always amazed how in a club, with the current tune pumping out, how a DJ uses their headphones to prepare and cue up the next tune. When I used to practice in the quietness of my home, I still struggled to beat match with nothing going on around me!
@timcasey5835

@@djemmay When I bought my first set of decks I had no idea what I was doing. I didn't know anything about the bar structure to music and just had to figure it out. I started by counting beats on pop records on the radio when I was driving and noticed that virtually every single record was 4 beats to the bar and that any change in the song occurred on the first beat of the 4 bar. It then occurred to me that if I synchronised two records at the same first beat in the bar of four they would change at the same moment. Once I realized this it was a question of training my ear to recognise if the incoming record was too slow or too fast and then make the necessary adjustments. My first set of decks where Citronics and were belt driven - this meant that they were very sensitive to any adjustment in speed with my hands, either pushing them to speed up by placing my hand on the record and literally pushing it to go faster or using my fingers to shave the speed by pushing against the side of the turntable. Either one of these adjustments sounded terrible because of the belt drive so it forced me to really concentrate on listening and making sure both records were running at the same speed before I used the cross fader to bring the incoming track in. I practiced relentlessly until one day everything just clicked. I still remember when it happened - I was messing around with the 12inch of BandAid Feed the world and the dub mix of Raise- Break for Love. By some crazy accident I beat mixed the two records together perfectly and it became an instant remix . Quite a few years later I used to do the mix if it was the early hours and people wanted something different. Cut a long story short I bought my first set of decks because I just loved music and without meaning to ended up playing all over Europe and being known as a proper DJ for a few years..... But to answer the point you made about not being able to hear the incoming track through the headphones, you are quite right. I used to have the mixers headphone volume turned up to 10 with my hand holding the left headphone tight to my ear so I could hear what I was doing.......they were good times but now the hearing in my left ear is pretty damaged...... If I am struggling to sleep somewhere noisy I just put my right ear to the pillow and use my left ear to block out the noise.......every cloud has a silver lining!! So please tell me how you knew that it was originally a mix by Dave Seaman on a Renaissance album??? I don't think I have ever met anyone else who knew about it?? And I have asked people because of how special it was to me!!

It was never meant to be a different version - it was done as an acapella mix by Dave Seaman in one of his sets and sounds really good as that - just a unique mix done live during a set. Someone obviously thought it sounded good as they put it together as another mix.
