Welcome to episode five in Offshore series.
In this episode I take a look at the Cathedral Reef and some of the reefs that I know of between them and the area we were looking at in the previous video.
One of the reefs on the way down to the Cathedrals provided one of my most memorable catches. Every fish you catch is exciting but most fade from your memory, unless there is something special about either the fight or the fish. This was special on both counts and is one of about a dozen or so catches that I remember vividly.
The reefs the I cover on the way down to the Cathedrals didn’t get anything like the attention they deserved when I fished the area in Wave Dancer. Some boats would fish them but nothing like the numbers around the well-known reefs such as Middle Reef, Sevens Reef, Boat Rock, The Group and Flat Rock (not a green zone back then).
When I was talking about zigzagging along the line of the reef, I didn’t specify how far you could zigzag. Obviously, you will be looking at your sounder and using the information there as a guide to when you should turn onto the next leg. As a guide though, some of these reefs are quite wide and you can zigzag around 500m either side of the line and still be over the reef area. Some of these reefs are patchy so make sure your search pattern covers as much of the reef as you have time for.
