In my 30s, not religious, but no matter how many 100s(?) of times I watch this I get goose bumps every time. I think that it's the way Whoopi's character would usually be someone that they would look down on, but instead they are inspired by her, and that she found a really meaningful way to make the best of her terrible situation. Making grumpy old ladies have fun is always a winner!

Amazing how sounds can raise such strong emotions within us. That sound is the wonderful world of music. The older I get, the longer the list of songs that get to me, from many kinds starting with a 3-piece band up to and including an orchestra of over 100 members, the good examples will move you. I have to go and listen to some.

I love this scene. The vocals were perfect! They sounded exactly as I would expect a chorus of nuns who were learning how to really sing for the first time, in their first performance, would sound. The storyline of a Las Vegas singer hiding out in a convent is excellent. But I have, and have always had, one criticism of the movie over all. This scene is perfect, but the reason it is perfect is because they took a wonderful Catholic hymn and be-bopped it into a genuine 1960s girl group rocker. I believe they should have continued with that effort all through the movie. Whoever had the balls to turn Oh Maria into this outstanding performance could have done the same with any number of other traditional tunes. Instead they turned a bunch of actual 1960s girl group hits and repurposed them. I thought this was an opportunity lost and I can't help thinking how much better the movie could have been if they did that. I still love the movie, but if we got that version this movie would still be playing in theaters 30 years later. Well, maybe not. But you get my meaning.
