I had a seemingly similar intermittent brake failure problem on a car with no abs. However, it was at a low rate of speed in a rural area. Got the car stopped using my parking/emergency brake. Checked the fluid level in the master, looked for leaks, and couldn't find anything wrong. Cautiously drove the car home, and the brakes worked perfectly. Ended up changing the master cylinder because I didn't know what else it could be. This happened years ago, I,m still driving that vehicle and I've never had it happen again. It's definitely a very eerie feeling when you're trying to stop a vehicle, and the brakes don't work. I'm glad Steve made it out of that situation without much damage.

Good thoughts with the moisture and all that. BUT if this was the problem, he should have made FULL pressure when he initially hit the brakes. Then they would begin to fade. They will not act like they did in his case because he already had no pressure when he stepped on it. So the problem was already there before the end of the pass. He's probably right about the residual brake pressure causing him to drag the brakes all the way down the track. That caused his fluid to boil before he even stepped on the pedal. I'm almost sure the tbm rotors are just machined flat. OEM's manufacture their rotors with a little runout to push the pads away from the rotor when you'r not using the brake. Without this runout the piston gasket would be the only thing that pulls piston and pad away from the rotor. If the whole assembly is not absolutely 100% new and clean then the gasket will not have enough force to pull everything away from the rotor. Maybe there was moisture involved, but first of all there shouldn't be 17psi of brake pressure when he's going down the track. Especially with flat machined rotors that are not ventilated!

The brake fluid got overheated and aerated. It's possible the line lock held just enough pressure to the front brakes causing them to drag. I would think the pads front or rear would show excessive heat if that was the issue. The brake fluid itself if it's been in the car awhile will lose it's higher boiling point. It could also be if the rotors are or were warped, that too could cause an oscillation where the brake pistons are being beat on. Think of shaking a bottle of Coke, when it foams you can't drink it. Five minutes later it goes back to normal . That's why you had brakes when being towed on the return road. Bottom line, you're safe and the Wagon isn't damaged.

@jantorep
3 ай бұрын
There might be several reasons for this to happen. Brake fluid will go bad after a while and should circled trough the system at set intervals with new fresh fluid. Are you running hard lines all the way from the masters to the point where you have the flexible lines to the calipers? Those need to be as close you can get them. Also are you running flexible brake lines that can handle high heat? Your exhaust system is very close. You should consider shielding your entire brake system from the exhaust as it's pretty close to everything as the radiant heat is very high at full pull. And check your calipers, pads and rotors for any drag and damage. Luckely you have a chute. I have had brake failure on a track car due to overheating at 160+mph at the end of a straight away and it's not fun when you need to make a turn. Thank god that there was a good run off zone there. Love the videos, keep em comming :)

That is exactly what happens when the fluid boils, it cools down and brakes come right back. I'm not sure what fluid you use but I'd highly recommend Castrol SRF fluid, it doesnt absorb water nearly as much as other race brake fluids (absorbing water is typically what causes race fluid to boil, the wetness greatly decreases the boiling point) this is even more critical in high humidity locations.

Glad the car didnt suffer massive damage but check brake line locations near the hot side, you were on the 2 step a bit longer than it usually has been so that may have been all it needed to send the brake fluid temp into the boiling range OR if fluids never been flushed it could have condensation in the calipers/master that boiled causing brake fade. Doesnt take much especially with the high temp heat cycles those calipers sees, that fluid could easily be contaminated…….The wifes comment had me dying😂😂

I'm pretty sure this has probably already been said Steve but the only thing I can think of is brake line routing? Do any lines run next to parts that get really hot anywhere that it's avoidable to do so? Turbo placement low and outside as they are, I can't tell on video the room for airflow between those housings and exhaust in the front by those calipers and lines? Seriously trying to be helpful, just asking some questions. Very glad to see it was at a track with good runoff/over pits/lanes. It seems those small rocks work really well and I'd bet are easier to clean out than sand because as we all know, "sands irritating and it gets everywhere". Glad you're good and the wagon is relatively in one piece...but.... you might want to trade that sheet of carbon on you just made for your trans cover for a piece of carbon/kevlar instead lol, better chances of it not shattering. Carbon is a great composite for weight, kevlar is good for abrasion and damage resistance as well as weight (but not as light as carbon), hence why they started mixing the two years ago for certain areas of use.... kevlar is great for wheel wells, undersides, lower body panels ect, especially in racing, not drag were weight is more important, but the trans area is one of those spots where it would be better suited... plus it looks, IMO, much better than straight carbon any day, especially in dogbone weave 👌

Normaly the brake pressure should be near zero so the breakpad can retract so much that a air cushion builds up between the pad and the disk. That is important to cool the disk otherwise the brake system takes the heat and refuses it's dutys. I think there is something off with the main zylinder or pedal. Warped disks would result in oszilating pressure on your log-readings. Maybe it is somthing simple like a damged or never installed spring. Remember, you put the car in secounds to a amount of stress other cars did not experience in there whole life. ;) And I know the feeling from racing with shifter-karts when you at 6th gear, full throtle coming from the straight to a hairpin turn and your brake pedal is entering the void.
