The protagonist, Parkins, is a young “Professor of Ontography” at Cambridge University. He embarks on a golfing holiday in the fictional town of Burnstow (based on Felixstowe, Suffolk) on the east coast of England.
Parkins secures a room at The Globe Inn, but he’s somewhat uncomfortable about the room containing a second bed.
An archaeological colleague asks him to investigate the grounds of a ruined Templar preceptory near the inn for a potential dig.
While exploring the preceptory site, Parkins discovers an ancient bronze whistle hidden in a hole in the masonry.
Curiosity piqued, he inspects the whistle in his room. It bears two inscriptions: indecipherable and Latin, translating to “Who is this who is coming?”
When Parkins blows the whistle, a sudden wind gusts outside his window, and he sees a solitary figure in a vast, dark expanse.
That night, Parkins experiences terrifying visions of a man fleeing an apparition along the beach. The figure in fluttering draperies pursues relentlessly.
The story masterfully blends academic curiosity, ancient artefacts, and supernatural dread. Parkins’s encounter with the unnatural creature summoned by the whistle leads to a chilling revelation.
