If you live in Columbus City school district that has a failing grade; you can get a voucher to send your kids to private school. Also, Columbus Alternative High School (CCS) ranks as one of the best high schools in central Ohio.

15 years living in Columbus. The surrounding suburbs are just that suburbs which you would find anywhere. Some of the neighborhoods outside the belt are nice with a New England, PA feel to them. Columbus City Schools are pretty awful in general although there are several opportunities for specialized schools and lottery into the few that are exceptional. Like any urban school district each is really hot or miss and depends on the teachers and faculty. As a parent with two children enrolled, Incan say it’s been great for one and Hell for the other. There are several benefits to Columbus, lots of diversity and if you love (ethnic) food this is the place. Several music and entertainment venues exist. Our Metroparks are numerous and well kept. One can get almost anywhere in the city from any other part within 40 minutes (traffic depending) . There isn’t much downtown save for a few businesses and shops which cater to them. What most pwople think of as “downtownl” is called the Short North District, where a good majority of the upscale shoppes, clubs and restaurants are. Grandview on the lower W side is also a great neighborhood and up and coming. The downside is we are well on our way to becoming the 10th largest population dense city in the nation. With that means lots and lots of traffic. The Short North which I referred to bumps up against the lower East side (not a great place) like many cities depending on which direction one goes the crime gets better or worse. Sadly the crime is steadily increasing again especially in the entertainment districts. There are a few affordable areas within the metro area and each one of them seems to have an “affordable housing” residency nearby.
