Truly one of those head-scratching places. I do remember a couple dual-level areas in Indiana are the Erie Lackawanna Mainline. We have a small variation of this crossing in Milwaukee where there is a crossbuck in front of a concrete overpass to call attention to a grade crossing on the other side that is a street running spur into an asphalt distributorship. The overpass is CP the street trackage is UP. 200 block East Washington St pretty much in line with the huge Allen-Bradley four-faced clock. Thanks for sharing this Oddity

I've known about this crossing a while, live in Indiana... but have never gone and seen it for myself. But it's always been extremely fascinating to me. How could it not be?? The grade separation is seriously cool. The Erie Lackawanna through IN had a few areas of grade separation like this, but when it came to crossings, it was either a level crossing with both tracks, a road overpass over the tracks, or two rail overpasses at different heights above the road. But never a level crossing/overpass deal like this. This is a rarity for sure. And this line is an active Class 1 line... the EL has been removed for decades now.

I notice that the bridge height is 11" and are measured without train traffic. How much deflection down does a train have on the bridge when passing because that opening is going to shrink some when something heavy is on it. Every driver should know the height of their vehicle, but that is a down and up road under the bridge, so you're going to height if the road on either side isn't flat longer than the vehicle passing under it. Wonder what happens to the signals if something is crossing the bridge? Oh, and this is a science and math question. 🙃

Nearly every gated CSX crossing as well as NS and a good number on both CPKC and CN are set to ring until the gates fully lower. Im not exactly sure why they are set like this. Though I think the idea for this kind of set up is more for the bell to be a warning that the gates are dropping rather than a warning that a train is coming overall. Unlike signals that ring their bells when the gates are down. This also increases the life on bells since they are not used nearly as much and it decreases wear and tear as a result. Especially on mechanical bells.

The LED lights actually have an on-off sequence of flickering that is much faster than the human eye can detect, but when the "off" portion each flicker synchronizes with the rate of the individual still frames of the video, it gives the illusion that the lights are going off. This is a different expression of the exact same phenomenon that you see in movies, when the rapidly-spinning wheels of vehicles or the propellers of airplanes seem to move slowly, stop, or go backward because of how the position of the wheel features (such as spokes) or prop blades synchronizes with the frame rate of the movie film. With LED lights, the flickering is too fast for the human eye to see, but you can still "cheat" to see that it is happening. Sweep the focal point of your vision across the location of an LED light (not a light seen on video, but one you are actually looking at in real life), and you will see a streak of individual images of the light imprinted across your field of view. This method works well with modern car tail lights at night. Related to this, for many car tail lights, the proportion of time that the LEDs are "off" decreases (or even goes to zero) to make the brake lights appear to the human eye to be brighter than the running lights, when actually, the light intensity is the same but the nature of the flickering is the only thing that has changed (the light being "on" for an increased proportion of the flicker cycle fools the human eye into thinking it is brighter).
