My official Honda 2012 Service manual states that you place the bike on a level surface with the center stand to check the oil; so does my Clymer GL1500 manual.

How about driving a small stack of wood shims under the front tire until the front and rear tires are equidistant from the ground. Just out of curiosity I would check the oil level with the front wheel shimmed and not shimmed just to see if it changed the dipstick reading very much. I have a 2014 Honda VFR and a 2014 Yamaha FJR both with center stands. Never had any issues checking the oil levels with the bikes on the center stands.

Can Honda make it more complicated to change the oil & filter on a GW? Three drain plugs to remove the oil. And let’s not use simple oil-rings to seal the drain plugs, well use single use aluminum crush washers instead. And for adding/checking the oil level…one hole to add oil, and another hole for the dipstick. And of course we want these two holes on different sides of the engine. Without a center stand you balance the bike in an upright position while removing and reinserting the dipstick. But first, run the engine for a while, turn it off, wait 2-3 minutes, then perform that upright balancing act while sitting on the bike. Some manufacturers have figured out how to allow you to check your engine oil while on the side stand. And most have also figured out how to place a single drain plug in the block at its lowest point so there’s no need to have multiple drain holes. And I still have not figured why Honda thought having separate holes for adding and checking the oil was a good idea. Guess the new GW engines are designed by committee…and those committees all work from home and no longer comprehend the practicality of what they design. Now, let’s talk about the simplest of tasks, changing the air filter…

The Honda Africa Twin has the same procedure for checking the oil level except the dipstick is on the left side. It is much easier to hold the AT level compared to the Gold Wing. I have found that there is no appreciable difference between a “hold it level” and a centerstand check of the oil level. I'm sure the same thing could be concluded with the Gold Wing. Add to this, the fact that there is a much bigger rear wheel to ground gap when placing the AT on it's centerstand. If a centerstand was included on every GW - Honda would most likely have written using it when checking the oil level. Yes you could drive the bike's front wheel up on a small board (or just sit on the GW, hold it level, and check the oil). My take - the centerstand works absolutely fine for this procedure if you are on level pavement.

I have a tour model and that's how I will do it going forward. Those without a Tour would need to purchase the center stand kit or hold it up some how.

Max McAllister - I don’t have a tour model and added the centerstand myself. Fairly inexpensive and easy install. I can’t imagine why anyone would not add a centerstand on this type of bike. They spend $35 on a stupid cup holder, hundreds on aftermarket windscreens, highway pegs, and all kinds of other stuff. A centerstand is essential for basic maintenance!

Point is, if a critical item is factory-cost 35 bucks on a $24K bike, it should have come from the factory with one. I'm with Max, totally ridiculous on Honda's part.

WHY NOT SET THE BIKE LEVEL, ESTABLISH THE CORRECT OIL FILL, PUT THE BIKE ON THE SIDE STAND, RE-CHECK THE NEW OIL LEVEL AND MARK THE DIP STICK. YOU CAN NOW CHECK THE OIL IN BOTH POSITIONS....GLAD I HAVE MY 2013..

THEE most basic maintenance procedure should not be that complicated.

My 2019 goldwing checking the oil as per the manual shows the oil dead in the middle... BUT in the morning every day when I go to ride it the oil light comes on. Is this typical?

I would say no... I haven't heard that. I would make a post to the GL1800riders.com 2018 forum and see what other owners say. I would also report this to my Honda Dealer asap.

Max McAllister & Traxxion Dynamics thank you for the information, I brought it in and they confirmed my bike has oil in it but they would need to keep the bike for a couple days, but I guess they don’t do loaner bikes or anything like that (Bmw did ☹️) so I gotta get someone to help me drop it off or trailer it out there so they can look at. I wish they would have believed me on the phone that I checked the oil right so I didn’t waste a trip out there to the dealer. Thank you again for your reply!
