Thanks for the thoughtful, thorough explanation. Found suggestions elsewhere that a blocked breather drain hole could result in blowing oil all over the place but not having much experience with small engines didn't entirely know what to make of it until I found your video. Well done!

My old Ariens snow thrower just started this oil blowby, i removed the breather, it was pretty gunked up even though it gets frequent oil changes during the season, well it is a 1966 model and the crankcase breather probably has never been serviced, i tried out my new ultra sonic cleaner with orange detergent, cleaned it up nicely and checked the drain hole with a tip cleaner, made up some new gaskets by hand, refitted the unit the drain hole to the bottom of course, no more oil blowby, good tip, Thanks.

Glad you got it going again! The older stuff was made for a lifetime. The newer stuff is made for a season.

Debuging a 15.5briggs Sabre riding mower I bought for 200$ but smokes and gurgles oil in carb. Mint'ish condition. The engine sounds smooth, but puts out massive smoke. I think I may have found the culprit. Also bad fuel pumps seem to cause the same issue, but Briggs just uses gravity feed anyway! :) Thankyou much.

Another reason for oil to blow out is there has been too much oil in the crankcase, caused possibly by incorrect reading of dipstick, the wrong dipstick, or just overfilling with oil.

DOH!!! Thanks. I removed my breather to check the valve clearance. They were well within spec. I did not notice the drain holes in the breather when I reassembled it. YUP. Installed it upside down.

Thank you so much for posting this video. I just bought a snowblower from an older gentleman, and the engine was covered in oil, I cleaned it all up with some gas and a brush. I first thought blown head gasket or leaking valve cover gasket (cuz those bolts were not tight). But after watching this, I am positive that's what it will be. Thanks again.

This was a cool video after I did a costly reman on a Tecumseh HM80 I told my son to put oil in it when I had to leave to buy him some parts for his truck... Well there were over 3-5 quarts on the work bench. Me being a gray haired senior I did forget to tell him how much oil the motor takes and he did not remember to check the dip stick & do the math so just he dumped in a Quart & a half at his best guess he told me. It was way over full. I cannot fault him 4 my own stupidity but that valve cover breather assembly was totally bad & guess what I had oil gushing out. But I did not yell at the kid kinda a good thing that extra oil was actually in the thing. But this was my problem and I straightened it all out... Kohler single cyl's TAKE UP TO 2.5 quarts SOME TIMES NOT ALWAYS. Some times its just 1 & 1/2 or 2 quarts. Kohler V twins CAN TAKE UP TO 3.5 QUARTS UNTIL FULL. Just recently I had one of them CUB CADET FREAKS here with the 22.5hp V Twin engine. THE MANUAL CLEARLY STATED IT TAKES UP TO 148 ounces of oil which is OVER 4 quarts of oil. Turns out the thing only takes 3 quarts of oil. Where the hell Kohler ever came up with 4 quarts on that late model tractor???? I have no idea. Even the older Kohler V Twins take between 3 quarts & 3.5 quarts. I own a 20hp Kohler in an MTD mower & that takes just shy of 3 quarts. So even manuals can be totally twisted fables now days. Breaks & Scrapem no friggin better in the manual depot.... BOTH KOHLER & BRIGGS R ALL OVER THE MAP WITH THEIR OWNERS MANUALS AS WELL AS LISTING PARTS FROM PREVIOUS MODEL YEARS IN CURRENT MANUALS & MOST OF THEM PARTS ARE UNAVAILABLE TODATE. BRIGGS IS DOIN THE SAME FRIGGIN DANCES...

Most of the time its your cylinder head gasket is leaking drilling a 3/16 or smaller hole is sometimes a temporary fix and may still have hard staring issues.

I’m curious bc I genuinely don’t know, BUT what if you installed a small breather filter at the end of the tube? Would that allow air to exit while preventing any excess oil from spilling out? I would imagine some regular filter cleaning would be added but beats getting it all over the machine and your concrete.

I suspected as much for my old old Montgomery Ward Riding Go-kart (lawn mower in previous life) Briggs Engine. I was puking oil out the breather like crazy. I'll see if those drain passage ways are clear. If that doesn't fix time to replace the valve.

Thank you. Couldnt figure what this tube was on my lawnmower, it was spewing oil into the intake and keeping it running full power. I couldn't figure what it was, maybe unburnt fuel or some kind of egr.

Have this same engine on my snowblower only there is no "filter element" in the breather. Took it apart, cleaned it and cleaned the hole in the bottom but still blows large amounts of oil at full throttle. Im going to buy a new one after seeing this. Would enlarging the pin hole in the bottom be a bad idea?

Well for those of you replacing the Breather assembly this works. But, near the end, with anticipation I was hoping you would explain how to clean it. I'm guessing run gasoline through it. I'm afraid mine might not snap back together tight enough though. it has metal Clips only. And I might have to replace it. The rubber hose was broken apart. can I tape it?
@gordbaker896
7 жыл бұрын
Buy an new PCV ass'y or get a new hose. Gasoline will clean the filter. You could drill a couple 1/8" holes in the bottom behind the filter to allow more oil to drain back into engine.

Gord Baker well we had a different turn out. I got it all taken care of but I think it was ran too long but the gas leaking all over the place and Rod started knocking after I put in the new carburetor and breather. :-( probably partially my fault for not checking the oil before running it. I didn't get far though! One strip of the yard. We bought another used one. Might end up replacing the motor of that one. After all that.

Sponge may deteriorate if it can't handle the temperatures. Maybe use a stainless steel scratch pad cut to size.
