I think oil pastels have the edge because you can use them on a wide variety of surfaces. To achieve the full effect of soft pastels you need sanded paper, which is very expensive. But soft pastels have an undeniable unique look that you can't replicate any other way.

Nice video Chrissy. I used oil pastels years ago and haven’t touched them since. Maybe it’s time I pulled them out again. Thanks for reminding me I have them in my studio somewhere lol.

G'day there Henintsoa, thank you for watching and your question. For beginners, in my opinion, I would say Soft Pastels as they are more forgiving. Both mediums have their good and bad points. I enjoyed this experiment very much. Happy painting :)

for a beginner, what should I get? soft or oil?
@Xrissart
6 жыл бұрын
Ghazel thank you for your question, these pastels work quite differently and I suppose, one thing to consider would be what effect or outcome your going for. Each of these have their good and bad points. For a beginner? I would say try both before you commit to spending too much money. For example you can purchase 2 or 3 single pastels of each and see which one you prefer. That way you get a feel of how they blend and lay down on the surface. Personally I like both, but lean towards the soft pastels. I think they're more versatile with the style I paint in. You'll will have to come back and tell me your experiences. Happy Painting😀

For beginners, should I buy mungyo soft pastel?
@Xrissart
5 жыл бұрын
@Trix Fix, thank you for your question. Mungyo is a suitable brand for a beginner, however my choice would be to get something like Schmincke, Sennelier or Unison soft pastels, even if it's just a small handful of pastels. You'll have a more enjoyable experience. Thank you so much for watching.

Hi, i do mostly portraits, i was thinking about buying soft pastel or oil patel. Which one would look more smoother? I´d like to buy 2 or 3 of each to try them out, but where i live i can only get the set with 12 or more, and if i´m going to buy a set i prefer just buying it once haha. Which one should i buy? Thank you for your time! Greetings from Argentina

Sugarmonbebe, thank you for your questions. Soft and Oil pastels are so different. Although the application is similar, they work differently due to the binder. They're both smooth, but I've been working with the Soft pastels so much more than the oil ones, so therefore I would tend to lean towards the soft pastels (but that's me, other artists may prefer the oils over the soft). I think it's a great idea to buy 2 or 3 of each to try and see which one you prefer. Sennelier make lovely pastels (Soft and Oils) I have them both and they're just gorgeous to work with. Again thank you for watching and greetings from Australia.

@Xrissart

Hi Raghubir, they both blend well relative to their properties. The soft pastel is on the dry side whereas the oil pastel is more on the moist side, please also note oil pastels never dry. I couldn't tell which one blends better, they both blend nicely. Thank you so much for watching and your question. Happy Painting:)

"G'day" lol. Ooooh that grates on the ear. In my experience it's what some Australians do when 'playing up to' the false expectations of an international audience ... I just never hear it said here in Oz., unless there's an old re-run of a Paul Hogan or Steve Irwin show, doing their best Aussie stereotype impersonation. (Lol, I missed the rest of what she said after that, I was nursing my ears back to sanity!)

Seriously? Calm down. I say G’day and I know a lot of people here in my home town that say it. Sure maybe most Aussies don’t say it anymore but I mean get a grip, it’s just a word..
