My apologies Sir, I gave you advise to make your Primary more robust but you already had that covered. I am learning a great deal from your series. You have built a proper tank. So happy for you, I wish I could get my wife on a bike. I thought is was my lean angle stories then she suggested a sports car, just to scared of two wheels. Priceless intro. I

Great video. I’ve been waiting for more info on your engine build. I think you picked all the right parts. I only have 4K miles on my 2020 road glide. definitely thinking of a 128 build in the future and will probably do a lot of the same things/parts that you did. Thanks again for the update video. Riding season will be here before you know it. Look forward to more of your videos 👍

Cool bike bro, I have almost the exact same build as you except I installed a SE 55mm aluminum intake manifold. Didn't want to leave the OEM plastic one & I went gear drive and Powervision tuner.

We spoke before about engines - I asked what cam drive system you are using. You said that you went with chain drive and I understand why and of course respect your decision - but may I offer a little advice about tensioners, please check the tensioner pad from time to time - the material they are made from is prone to failure as it is only plastic. I have seen many chain tensioners with lumps of material missing and that can cause oil pump problems. I realise the S&S pumps are superior but it must be a wothwhile thing to slip the cam cover off at oil-change time and check the condition of the tensioner pad.

Advice is always welcome, thank you. I do know that the newer tensioners are better than the old ones, but I will have to inspect the primary chain tensioner for the same reasons. I will plan to check both. Thanks.

What was the price to have the crank done, with Timken conversion, and Carrillo rods? If you don't mind?

What reasoning did you have for going chain versus gear driven? Other than the cost, lol. I see you're interested in valve timing, wouldn't the gear driven cams provide you with more accurate valve timing? Given the Temken bearings and the Darkhorse crank, seems like direct drive is the way to go? Thanks for the introspective analysis. Helps in deciding what to do with my current build. I'm also considering the 124, the S&S 124 kit.

I’ve heard that if the gear drive isn’t done perfectly, it can be noisy. Since the chain drive has been rarely reliable, I decided to take the cheaper route and not risk messing it up.

@@apgapcruiser2687 gotcha. It can be noisy for sure. That was also my concern. From what I hear though, that'susually due to excessive runout. If you're

Improper gear lash is what causes the noise. I'm pretty sure, in order to change the gear lash you have to size up or down the gears. Which requires you to try a few different sizes, unless you get lucky on the first try. I will look into that tensioner. Thanks.

This is an excellent video and great build, thank you. A few questions: 1) did you consider replacing the transmission or is this not necessary for a stage 3?; 2) did you consider replacing your entire flywheel or is this not needed b/c of the upgrades/fixes Darkhorse performed?; 3) did you consider a slave cylinder to make shifting easier? If not, how is shifting with the upgraded clutch? Thank you.
@apgapcruiser2687

Thank you! I am closely monitoring the transmission. Now that I've done all this work, that is the weak point. Depending on how you drive, the stock transmission can be adequate. I try to be as smooth as possible, don't do burnouts or wheelies. I mainly use the power around the mountains here when two up, or coming out of a corner. So far the transmission hasn't given me any issues. The stock flywheels are good quality, and since Darkhorse balanced them, they are perfect for the build. Depending on your area, you may want to consider a slave cylinder. If I get stuck in construction or traffic, my hand gets sore. I think if I was to do it again, I would consider a Rekluse clutch because then the handle pull would be the same as stock and there wouldn't be any added pressure at higher RPM's. Hope this helps.

@@apgapcruiser2687 Thanks for the information. I have a 17' RGS, Stage 2 with a RS 468 cam, thunderheader exhaust and S&S oil pump and cam plate. Haven't decided whether I'm going to a Stage 3 yet but am going to replace with quality parts along the way in case I go in that direction. I'm replacing my stock clutch with a Bandit Sportsman clutch because it's shot and will take your advice and get a Trask clutch basket and AIM or Rekluse slave cylinder. I'll eventually get the DH man o war compensator if I go to Stage 3 along with some of the other components you noted. Again, thanks for the great videos.

On a scale of 1-10 for vibration, what number would you rate the vibration at the handlebars now after you had Dark Horse remove the counter balancer at all steady cruising speeds compared to the stock flywheel with the counter balancer on it?
@apgapcruiser2687
2 жыл бұрын
It’s probably a 6 at idle, but my 475 cam has a pretty big lift to it, so that’s adds some vibration to it. I different cam would be smoother. When going down the road, it’s smoother than stock.

Can you advise if most Harley M8 engines need a rebuild? Are they a flawed design?
@apgapcruiser2687
2 жыл бұрын
The bigger the engine and more power, the better the design needs to be. Personally I feel like Harley’s design could handle the m8’s power as long as the engine is put together well. The fact that Harley finds .012 runout acceptable on a crankshaft is crazy to me and as long as they are putting their engines together with tolerances like that, there will always be engines that fail. The short answer, I wouldn’t rebuild an m8 unless I started hearing or feeling symptoms. But, after two m8’s in a row that had some sort of engine issue, I wouldn’t buy another one.

My plan was to upgrade the oil pump in the beginning since those weren’t the greatest design. Once I started that, things went downhill from there, so I decided to start from the ground up and do it right.
