“Where possible, we shall accomplish it. Where impossible, we shall make it possible.” ―Wang Jinxi (8 October 1923 - 15 November 1970)
“Iron Man” was the title bestowed upon Wang Jinxi, the oil worker who famously led the No. 1205 drilling brigade at the Daqing Oil Fields in the 1960s. His “iron spirit” embodied the principles of selflessness, hard work, patriotism and revolutionary heroism.
“Iron Man” Wang Jinxi was born on 8 October 1923 to a poor peasant’s family near Yumen City, Gansu Province. After the liberation of Yumen in 1950, Wang joined the first generation of oil workers in the new China. In April 1956, Wang became a member of the Communist Party, and later served as the captain of the predecessor to Brigade No. 1205. In 1958, during the Great Leap Forward, he led a team that went on to set the record for the greatest distance drilled in China, averaging over 5 km (3.1 miles) per month.
In 1960, he led the No. 1205 Drilling Brigade to open virgin oil fields in Daqing, toiling in temperatures below -30 Celsius (-22 Fahrenheit). In May 1960, while suffering a leg injury, he leaped into a mud pool at Well No. 2589, stirring the mud vigorously to suppress a blowout, an act for which he was subsequently hailed as the “Iron Man”. Within three years, Daqing became China’s most productive oilfield.
In 1964, Wang Jinxi attended the Ninth National Congress of the Communist Party and was elected onto the Central Committee. In June 1965, he joined the Chinese delegation to Albania. In 1968, he was appointed to the Daqing Revolutionary Committee.
On April 19, 1970, Wang was diagnosed with stomach cancer, exacerbated by years of heavy toiling. He was admitted to the 301 Hospital in Beijing for treatment. His final appearance was on 1 October 1970, overseeing the National Day celebrations on the Tiananmen Gate Tower.
Wang Jinxi died on 15 November 1970, aged 47. A final obituary was published in the People’s Daily on 27 January 1972, titled “The Pioneer Warrior of the Chinese Working Class―‘Iron Man’ Wang Jinxi”. He is recognised, alongside Sun Yat-sen, Mao Zedong, Lei Feng, Jiao Yulu and others, as one of the “Greatest Chinese Figures in the 20th Century”.
