This video shows us changing the oil in an oil bath on our Comet D pattern Windmill in Eldorado, North East Victoria.
The wicks we use are extra fine pure marino worsted wool.
Over the years we have tried many different wicks but find these to work best of all. the size of the wicks vary in different oil baths on the mill depending on number of wicks per oil bath, size of oil bath and the item that is being oiled.
The oil we use is Gulf Western "Superdraulic 100" hydraulic oil.
We have been recommended many oils, tried all different oils and have found this oil to be superior wicking, non gelling and non hygroscopic. any water that gets in the oil baths, which I assume is from condensation, tends to sit at the bottom of the bath just like oil that separates from diesel fuel.
My son has been working on this windmill with me for six years.
