Despite the camera difficulties, I loved being able to see all of the parts clearly. Not enough people explain lubrication with enough video and visual examples. Thanks for the great video!

James Kolby Sir. Thanks for the wonderful comment. I make these videos to help others and I leave in any mistakes. Today I was going to do a video on shaping a hairspring stud for a Hampden Pocket watch and I screwed up when pressing the hairspring back onto the balance staff. Ahhhhh! So not today I guess....stepped back from the bench:)

I refuse to work on Russian movements because I like to take my time when working on a watch. 😉😉 In all seriousness I am all for more efficient processes but if being pushed to 'rush' ( go faster ) I would turn the work away. I tend to read the person and if they're anxious to get the watch back fast, if they're asking me how long it will take and their facial expression changes when I give them what they feel to be too long a time estimate, I simply tell them I'm not going to be able to work on their watch. On the other hand I learned long ago in my career to never give an estimate that I cannot meet or beat. If you get the job completed sooner (but not too much sooner. If you get it finished much sooner, sit on it for awhile) or on time, you're a hero. If you're late, you're a bum. One must learn to pad their estimates just right and it takes time / experience to know how much to add.

The watch should be disassembled and cleaned before being oiled or lubricated otherwise you are just applying new oil over dirty parts and congealed oil unless you are what we used to call a "Dipper" which is inadvisable!

From Bulova 2453.10 service instructions... "Tight Cannon Pinion: Either lack of lubrication or foreign matter between the cannon pinion and the centerwheel post can cause the pinion to bind, causing damage to the minute wheel, hour wheel and minute post. The cannon pinion must be removed during servicing. The center wheel post and cannon pinion must be lubricated to prevent damage to the dial train." Some Cannon pinions absolutely need lubrication.
@JDRichard

Totally agree. I usually never lub the cannon pinion, but I should. That would be some 9104 on the outside of the hour wheel shaft; correct?
@visteobman4202
4 жыл бұрын
@@JDRichard could be 9104. In 1980 it called for ol-206. I can't find a cross reference, but it's called for on the stem and various setting mechanisms. I did find that ol-216 cross references to 9010 based on viscosity. If there's a cross reference to these old oil part numbers, I can't find it on the web.

Thank you very much for this video. Great learning stuff. I'm happy you got around to explaining the oiling. One question though. You did not cover how to oil or grease the case of an old pocket watch. I typically see some black stuff under the crown when I unscrew it and also at the "corner" of the front/back covers (where the covers tilt around the main body of the case). What kind of lubrication is required in these places and how much? Thank you!
@JDRichard
3 жыл бұрын
You can use D5 in these locations and just a little or it will migrate. The stuff you see does not start out black, just ages. Again do not put too much lubrication on the case parts as they will collect dust and dirt more quickly.

@@JDRichard A slightly off topic question (didn't know where else I could ask you): I have a few nickel/silveroid/etc. pocket watch cases that I'd like to clean in my little hobby-level Chinese ultrasonic machine. I have no problem placing the back covers and front bezels in a water-dishwasher solution and they come out very nice and clean. However, I don't dare putting the main body of the case into a watery solution because I fear that the water might corrode something inside the case sleeve. I'm curious about your take on cleaning old pocket watch cases, especially related to ultrasonic machine cleaning. How do you do it, what liquid do you use and do you dare placing gold-filled or gold-plated cases into the ultrasonic? Thanks!
@JDRichard
3 жыл бұрын
@ I don’t think there would be any issue putting the case in the ultrasonic machine. However, you could dry it with a hair drier right after to evaporate any water liquid. Then oil the case with D5 or equivalent. Should not harm the gold on the gold filled watches. If you were really paranoid, you could dip the crown sleeve area and the back hinge in lighter fluid after the ultrasonic wash and drying and then let it dry, then oil.

Richard, great vid man!, im starting to mod watches and have recieved my oils, nut the question is the expiration date is only a year 2023... but seeing your vid uploaded on dec 2019, that would mean the oil is expired? can oil expire? or do they have to put an estimation date on it? im bit stuck on that part, its very expensive Moebius-D5

The way dust gets in is by means of the hole for the winding pin, by means of capillary action, think about it you wear the watch and or have it in a pocket and due to body heat the watch warms up now you take it off and the watch cools off it acting like its own vacuum. Hence dirt, hair and dust. Got that from a book not my knowledge, called “watch repairing as a hobby.
@JDRichard
3 жыл бұрын
That is very interesting. Really never thought of it that way. Thank for the insight.
@chang.stanley

Only liquids are affected by capillary action, and the winding pin is sealed by o rings, or else water can get in.
@littlejackalo5326

Yeah, dust can't exhibit capillary action. Maybe a vacuum can build up and then suck dust in by airflow, but not capillary action.

@JDRichard

If your oris stops, the amplitude is poor and you need to have the watch completely cleaned. Or, there is dirt in the movement somewhere. Or, there is an issue with mainspring, gears or the escapement. Not a simple oil job I’m afraid
