i remember watching "oils on the water" on the abc back in 1985, i was living in queensland at the time, its the best live show of all time!, i went on holiday to sydney in jan 85, and got the 2 JJJ oils on the water gig shirt. I saw them live for the first time in nov 85 in rockhampton, then a month later in sydney for the "save our rain forest" gig, with spy v spy, do re mi, warumpi band, awsome!!, i still have gig shirts 4 both shows!, i last saw oils at the n.e.c in birmingham, uk in 1990.

It's about how Sharman exploited Aboriginal boxers in his traveling boxing troupe. Didn't matter who won or lost, it was only about beating each other up, sometimes day after day. It went out of business in '71 when the law stated boxers could only fight once a week.

"From the red dust north of Dalmore Downs Sharman's tents roll into town Twelve will face the auctioneer Sharman's Boxers stand their ground Their days are darker than your nights But they won't be the first to fall Children broken from their dreams But they won't be the first to fall Fighting in the spotlight Eye's turn blacker than their skin For Jimmy Sharman's boxers It's no better if you win Standing in the darkness Lined up waiting for the bell The days are wasted drinking At the first and last hotel Why are we fighting for this? Why are you paying for this? You pay to see me fall like shrapnel To the floor What is the reason for this? There is a reason for this? What is the reason they keep coming back for more? The blows now bring him to his knees But still the crowd calls out for more The drums are burning in his ears The man keeps counting out the score"

+ albert dib, you are spot on mate, this song should be taught in all australian high schools, every sentence explored, teach the children about compassion to fellow humans, not this dog eat dog , lets scapegoat refugees, unemployed, greenies, unions, etc, spewed out by a heartless liberal party and labour are no better. After they finish jimmy sharmans, the kids can learn , U.S forces then, power and passion (" gough was tough till he hit the rough, uncle sam and johnny quite enough). the kids today are taught a whitewashed version of history.
