Looking good! My Paul Rubens Pastels are ridiculously inconsistent, and the Indian Yellow and that one Dark Green is the worst. I was so annoyed by that at first, I wrote them such a bad review, but then I deleted it a day later because I figured it's not fair, since most of the pastels in the set are good. I find them very soft and also kinda sticky though. The only other high quality oil pastels that I have worked with are Mungyo and Neopastel, which are very similar in feel, and I find those so much easier to work with than the Paul Rubens ones. I can easily do the whole picture in Mungyo or Neopastel, with Paul Rubens I just can't. I mean I could, and I have, but I did not like it. The Paul Rubens oil pastels are my top layer set now, that is what I find them really good for. And I think Pentel is massively underrated. Yes they smell pretty bad (I just bought a new package again, they still stink exactly like the one from two years ago...) but they work good. I actually really enjoy using them, especially on this sandy paper. Have you seen the Sunny oil pastels? They are this Chinese brand and they are an obvious knock-off of Cray Pas expressionist. I found those super cheap on German Ebay, for like a third of their Amazon listing, so I had to try them. Really not that impressive overall, but their white is, it is super soft and covers basically anything, super opaque. Maybe I am easy to impress because I have not tried the Sennelier white that everyone praises, but man, that is a good white. Oh, btw, apart from Prismacolor, another pencil that works so well with oil pastel is the Derwent Drawing. When I need a fine blacke line, maybe for lashes, I have been using those and they will just blend in there, you can't even tell that this part wasn't also done in oil pastel. I think the oil in the oil pastels melts the pencil material a bit, so everything just fuses.

Really love this colourful painterly piece which immediately takes me to a spring picnic in a quiet field spot. It’s one of my favs of yours so thanks for the review Lindsay. I was very interested in your review because I’ve stopped buying art supplies due to my terminal prognosis but I am going to now go ahead and buy a pad of this paper. You’re one of the very few content creators whom I trust regarding product reviews because you are honest about the product. Thanks again!

PS: There’s another product I came across - Fabriano “soft” press watercolour paper, you may have already seen it or have it. I might even have some myself as I have a ton of watercolour paper! It’s in between a hot and cold press apparently. Thought I would mention it.

Lindsay, THIS is why I enjoy your channel and you so much!!! Your versatility with mediums is amazing and this painting is so lovely! 💝👏🏻💝 I have oil pastels stored somewhere in a lovely wooden drawers box, probably like yours, and completely forgot about them. Those are a medium I could do too whilst in this bed! I miss my traditional oils very much but these are a very good, close second. Thank you for that reminder! ❤️😘

You make oil pastels lol so easy! 😂 I gambled and went all in on 4 of those Canson Sand Grain pads while they were on sale, I have to say I kind of love it. I've been working with soft pastels a lot lately and this seems like a happy medium between pastel card and mi tientes. (And so much cheaper! Which is great because my 6 yr old likes to run off with my textured papers.) It also handles watercolor under-paintings pretty well so far. Thanks for the awesome videos! I might just dig out my mungyos and give oil pastel another go.

Hullo Lindsay, I enjoy watching you create your paintings! You are truly inspirational and such an accomplished artist! You switch mediums with an ease and inspire with each and every video! I really looked into those drawer sets for soft pastels storage, I just bought to many sticks and would need so many drawers! I finally ended up making my own “Heilman style” box for storage. I like being able to close the box up and move it more easily from location to location. I did get a Jackson’s pastel box but I had to add more lid catches. The lids just don’t seat well enough to keep my sticks in place. Boy Oh boy, how I do run on! You certainly have that effect on me and many of your viewers! I suppose you are just so approachable and a delightful young lady! Please take care and be safe, all of our best to you and your family.

@@thefrugalcrafter yeah most of the pastel boxes are so expensive! I guess that if you are going to be buying top of the line sticks who blinks at several hundred dollars for a box to keep them in. ME! I spent about $53.00 on wood and supplies that I did not already have and built my own box! My most expensive sticks are Schmincke pastels. I know many people believe Terry Ludwig to be the best pastels available, I just don’t believe that I have enough experience to justify the cost of them! I did get the Jackson’s pastel box for 1/2 off when I used an affiliate link and my purchase was over $500.00 yes this is where I bought the Schmincke sticks!

Yay, oil pastels! Definitely one of my favourite things to work with, though I'm definitely not any good with them yet 😅 I'm going to give that paper a try, that's a great tip! Re: fine details in oil pastel art, I've seen a lot of Korean artists use paper stumps to really sharpen up the details that would be very difficult to achieve with the pastels. Sharpening them seems a bit unnecessary to me, like you'd lose a lot of material for very little benefit (oil pastels wouldn't hold that sharp edge for, like, any time at all). I've got the large Mungyo Gallery set, they're really great value! I've been meaning to complement that set with the Paul Rubens macaron set, but I'm in no rush. The Mungyo set is plenty versatile enough for me at the moment.

It feels like it has a coating and it has a more random pebbly texture. All pastels do well on it and softer pencils. It is more textured than Mi-Tintes but the surface feels coated like it would be less absorbant.
