It's a bit of a cult game that probably wont show up on many people's 'must play' lists (was happy to just see it show up on PSN after all), but it has a charm that sticks with you and music that tends to pop back into your head from time to time. I always loved the Tim Burton-esque art style as well.

The 2nd and 3rd songs are actually city themes (there are alternate versions that play when you go in a building). I actually wanted to put in some more requests for the battle themes, but life got in the way. Perhaps in the future.

Never heard of this game, that Highland Village sounded pretty nice, though I feel it was held back by the choice of instrument for the main melody. So that got me looking to see if there were some other versions of this theme and found an absolute gem of a piano version. For anyone that's curious, look for "ボクと魔王 (Okage: Shadow King) After Story 11 Theme of Highland Village". Thanks for introducing new VGM to me.

Theme of Madril is my favorite song in Okage Shadow King. It's the most... eccentric and different game I've ever played and I've played a -lot-. I played this music for my mom to listen to and just based on this song alone , it made her ask where it's from and made her start her own file on the game and play it lol.

Okage being translated as thanks is pretty funny. It comes from the phrase "okage sama de" in japanese, which does mean thanks to you... in a sense... but literally, it means by your (honorable) shadow. Your shadow being a formal way of addressing the person you are speaking to. It is generally used to deflect a compliment by saying the accomplishment was due to the actions of the person who gave the compliment. Literally, however, Okage can be interpreted a few ways depending on what characters are used to represent it. お陰 is the one in the phrase I was referring to. 大陰 would mean great shadow, and 王陰 would mean king-shadow.

Yoooo, Okage! This was one of those random PS2 JRPGs that I played as a kid alongside Wild Arms 3. It was never really popular and I never even got that far in it back then, but it has lots of memorable events and songs. The Madril music in particular is super nostalgic for me because it was such an early and big town, and the super catchy music made wandering around a lot of fun! Glad you got to hear this game, and big respect for reading those video descriptions for the context and to compare with your own guesses about the game. I really enjoy hearing your thoughts on what you think the context of these video game songs are like, and taking that extra step to understand a little about what the actual context is like afterwards is super nice.

Okage is one of my favorite games that I have never beat. It's so fun and zany and I try to go back to it every couple of years but I have yet to finish it. Still, I'm extremely fond of it, so happy to see the music on here~

I played Okage for the first time last year and despite the combat being a bit basic and the pacing being all over the place this game OOZED so much charm, the theme of the game itself being told in a unique way and was genuinely pretty dang funny throughout. The alternate/Low health version of the main battle theme is SO good and the alternate Evil King/Boss battle version is... Something else!

Oh man, Okage. The vibe is one of the closest things to Earthbound I've encountered outside its series... A weird kind of charisma. Accidentally overwrote my save with my sister's as a child while helping her train, put it down for years, and came back to beat it as an adult. It's got loads of early-PS2 cruft on the edges and it's by no means mechanically perfect, but the audiovisual direction and the characters really make it worth checking out.

interesting find on the translation. my japanese isn't great, but i'm relatively sure O means King and Kage means Shadow. though japanese devs do have a hell of a penchant for puns so the meaning you found may also be valid in some way. never played this game.

Just a slight correction, O (which is actually a two vowel long sound so its pronounced 'oo' like the 'oh' in Ohm, though it is romanized as 'ou') literally means 'big' but what it truly means is grand, great, important, or otherwise upon a pedestal. While O can mean king in certain contexts (because kings are great, grand, important, etc) it does not necessarily mean that in all contexts. Another example of this, the game Okami's name derived from the word okami which means "great god" or "important god" which describes your player character perfectly.

Random fun fact; the protagonist has a different face depending on region! The guy with red-ginger hair, default name Ari, looks like the boxart in eastern regions with big ol’ stylized circle eyes ingame, while western gets a more realistic look with smaller almond eyes to appeal to the western audience. It’s pretty neat!

Goodness gracious, Okage is truly one of my favourites, but really obscure, I'm glad you're breathing a bit of love into it! By the way, there is a track called Vampire Evil King that I often come back to listen!
