Ellie telling Joel about the sheep ranch Tommy's, and then moon, made him smile and giggle a bit- but when Ellie told him "I'll follow you anywhere you go", that smile faded. That sudden change in Pedro's eyes, that micro-acting was soooooooo good. That sense of both relief and disbelief from hearing that from his surrogate child is what HEALED him at that moment. So when Ellie said that "There's no halfway with this" "we finish what we started", you can still see that same look on his face, but this time, it's different. It's the look of "Okay, we'll see it through TOGETHER, and we will live the rest of our lives in our way after this".

Joel recognized Ellie was in a rough patch. She was ready to give her life up and he knew it because he had been there. "The reason I'm telling you this," he said to her. It will get better eventually. Joel's bullet missed. Henry's did not. All Joel was trying to do was make Ellie's bullet miss.

Looking at their views where her videos switch from her and some guy (couple hundred views)to her in stereotypical lesbian clothes/hat with lesbian friend (25-30k views) I'd say they're on to something. The most bone-chilling words spoken in this series are when Joel looks up at Marlene and says "....I do...". You can hear the absolute darkness in his voice just obliterating anything human or compassionate in regards to anything but him and what he cares about. It's so subtle but it's some of the best acting in the series.

On Tess and Joel, my take is that Tess was all in, Joel was her person. Joel was still shut down. He wasn't admitting or allowing himself to feel much. He still felt for her but couldn't/wouldn't articulate it. Then he loses her and he almost shuts down again. Then he reads Bill's note about protecting Tess -- and he has to go outside and cry and break down. He allows himself to admit he loved Tess. He allows himself to consider that maybe he has a life left to live as a protector. He promptly goes back in and tells Ellie he'll take her, gives her rules, helps her with her seat belt, and even smiles at her joke in the car. Joel came back to life because of Bill's letter. And oh boy, did he take Bill's lesson to heart -- be a protector. And Tess's too: Save who you can save. Meanwhile, I really enjoyed all your reactions to the show, even if I didn't realize right away that you would be spoiling BOTH games AND the show so thoroughly (when I first started watching, I was just looking for fellow female queer reactions to episode 3, which unfortunately were pretty rare). Not long after, you spoiled us about an important plot point about Joel that devastated me. However, I appreciate that your later videos have been much more thorough on the "spoilers" aspect, so thanks for doing that. I hope you keep recording reactions, you're both so much fun to listen to, and your reactions are so smart and passionate. Thanks for such a fun season!

I forgot how Pedro’s mom died the first watch through. Ugh, that’s so heartbreaking. 😞 Pascal is her surname. I wonder how that played into the choices regarding Joel’s admission to Ellie just like I wonder how the way Bella identifies played into the line about Ellie not being girly. It seems like they really had a collaborative creative experience with a lot of the little choices that round out the characters so I wouldn’t be surprised to hear they were purposeful nods of respect or something.

For me, Joel's survival mechanism for 20 years was to disassociate and enter survival mode to protect himself so he could protect family. Like in the vampire diaries, he had to turn off his humanity switch. Ellie brought his humanity back, as it rose he had panic attacks because of all of that unresolved feelings he buried were coming back at once. The sign he was fully back, was when he called her baby girl. A moniker he hadnt used since Sarah died. He let himself do more than just survive, she helped him live and love again, much like Frank did for Bill. Faced with the sudden threat of losing a second daughter, his survival mode kicked back in. The glassy eyes and shortened speech show it. I like to think this time though, that two important lessons stayed with him. 1.Tess told him to "Save who he could save". As a father, for better or worse, choosing to save ones daughter over a hypothetical, poorly researched chance to save strangers. A no brainer for me. 2. Bill told him that he "there was one person worth saving" and "god help any mother fucker that stood in his way" He isn't a hero, nor is he a villain, he is a father who keeps going for family and she isn't cargo anymore. if anything it puts him in the anti-hero category, like the Punisher. He IS "The Contractor!"

I think an important thing is to acknowledge what Marlene said. "...because she lives in a broken world that you could have saved." The entire series has shown, even more so than the game, that the infected actually have very little to do with the world being "broken". It's people. People like David. Like Kathleen. Like Marlene. There has been a distinct dearth of infected throughout most of this season, and honestly I understand that choice now after watching the finale. The damage of cordyceps has for the most part already been done. Infected are a scary presence, to be sure, but eventually they'll all just eventually settle down, spread on a wall somewhere, and dry out. David was a monster, but he was right about one thing, albeit entirely incidentally. Cordyceps isn't evil, it's just doing what it was evolved to do. But people and the choices they make can perpetuate evil. But people can also be amazing. Communities like Jackson are thriving, and hope for humanity is there. Marlene is sort of right in that the world is broken, but it's because of people like her that are trying to cling to a past that isn't possible to return to. She's preventing her owm healing and that of the world at large instead of moving forward. In this way she's a foil of Joel. Joel was bitter and jaded because he never allowed himself to heal after the death of his daughter. Until Ellie came into his life and gave him his "new reason to keep fighting." It doesn't really matter if the cure would have worked or not. It wouldn't be worth sacrificing a child without her consent.

SPOILERS FOR FIRST AND SECOND GAME: I agree apart from the ending. In my opinion, both Marlene and Joel knew Ellie would have wanted to sacrifice herself. Ellie was raised in a broken brutal world that Joel COULD have saved. Ellie’s experience through the show and game are worse than death, it’s psychological torture. Everyone she’s cared for has either died or left her, what kind of world is that? And on top of that, as long as she is alive there is nothing they can do to change it and nothing they can do to change it for her. Sacrificing a child without their consent is morally wrong, but keeping a child alive in a broken world that caused the death of almost everyone she loves is not any better than what Marlene tried to do. I believe both sides were wrong but both sides were right in this situation. Sacrificing a life that was brought into a torturous world to save billions possibly trillions of lives in the future is a life worth sacrificing. However, again there is no consent. Joel makes it sound like he is giving Ellie a chance by saying they should give her a choice, but he was being hypocritical. By saying that, he was not giving Ellie a choice, he was keeping her alive because he couldn’t bare the thought of losing another daughter. I may sound like I don’t like Joel, which is not true, I view him as neutral, I am only critical of his decisions as well as Marlene. No one is a truly good or bad person, just people who make bad decisions no matter how disgusting vile or repulsive they are. Some deserve to be punished for their actions. This is part of what the second game is about, it pushes the boundaries of what makes someone an antagonist or a protagonist. Joel is punished for his actions by being tortured and killed, without the context of the game, Naughty Dog presents Abby as a monster who cold heartedly took Joel’s life and robbed Ellie of Joel. As the game progresses, your anger progresses as well. This stops when you get to Abby’s sections, you no longer start to see her as a monster. You see her as a young 19 year old woman, just like Ellie, in grief. She was also robbed of her father and she was robbed of her father first. Ellie then robs her of her friends and Abby robbed Ellie of hers, all through violence. When does it end? How does it end? Tolerance and forgiveness is the answer. You don’t need to forgive Abby, but you need to view from her perspective which will result in tolerance. You don’t have to like her much like Ellie, but you have to tolerate because Abby has been through the same thing as Ellie. On this topic, I would like Part III to follow Ellie and Abby and the story be based on how and if you can grow to like or forgive your enemy, how much perspective does it take to grow to totally understand your enemy and view them as an equal?

I would add that judging Joel is 'easier' because Joel promised Tess that he'd take Ellie to Marlene and the Fireflies, make it worthwhile and make up for all the stuff they'd done. But do you suppose Marlene's promise to Anna involved slicing her daughter open one day? I don't, and in that sense Marlene is as morally compromised as he is, part of the broken world she wants Joel to fix. Maybe she genuinely cared about Ellie, but in the end she at best broke her promise to Anna and at worst she outright lied to her. Because Anna lies to her when she said she cut the umbilical cord before she was bitten, either because she didn't know what Marlene would do...or because she did know. Like Joel, Anna decided that Ellie must live, it's just that no one considers that a bad thing.

Just wanted to put out there that the house where Ellie's mom runs into at the start it can't just be coincidence that the outside area even the building itself looks just like Dina and Ellie's farm from part 2. The tractor out there in the field positioned the same way and distance from the building. A tree that Ellie carves a name into is there in the same place too. The house needs repairs as does the surrounding wooden fence but yes that was so awesome. The best intro left for the final episode.

Anna was to expect Marlene and her crew in that safe house but they were late... if wasn't for that, maybe Anna would live for much longer and set a different fate for everyone and even especially Ellie. That is sad. Joel talking about Sarah to Ellie in the end was because Joel felt guilty or knew that Ellie would resent him and was getting rambling and Ellie got that. She knew something was wrong with him but didn't know what but him talking around like that was a sign of trying to hide something and she is smart and have a bullshit detector very strong. That is why she was getting anxious and "SWEAR to me..." cut the bullshit and tell me whats going on. She maybe didn't realize anything in the hospital or what happened to Marlene but then when Joel lied, she was doing the math. And I recommend the podcast of HBO for this episode so much! I cried and I smile so many times, Ashley was there with Craig, Neil and Troy. Especially some of these conclusions are from them and more... Man Ellie is so mature and has the right to know the truth. But Joel is so afraid to lose her and remained in fear telling a lie because he love her so much.
@HasturFGC

I always felt like Marlene acts way less moral in the end than Joel, and it’s easy to paint Joel as a monster because of the hospital massacre. All of Marlene’s moral justification hinges on the idea that it’s what Ellie would have wanted, but she had plenty of time to ask her but didn’t. She could have let her make the choice but didn’t. What Ellie wanted wouldn’t have mattered at all, if she had said no they would have still done the surgery. Both sides overwrite Ellie’s autonomy for their own reasons, the only difference is Marlene is an idealist who would kill a child to accomplish her goals.

Marlene was more ruthless than Joel. She didn't give Elle a choice. Because there never was a choice. The fireflies would take what they wanted. Like, the lie Marlene said about how Joel and Ellie were captured. Saying the soldiers didn't know their description. Marlene knew who they were and could of informed the soldiers. But they knock them out, so there wouldn't be a choice.

When you have a kid that travelled across the country risking her life several times a day just to get there, that hardly warrants a question. Even Joel confirmed, she fought like hell to get there. She was desperate. Would she prefer to go with Joel afterwards? Of course. Would she agree to die for the cause? Of course. She was ready to die a while ago with Riley, and Marlene knew it better than anyone. Convincing yourself with "she would've done that anyways" is pointless, if Ellie wanted to live she would choose "no risk" option and left with Joel to Tommy. Telling a girl that she is about to die is f***ed up, and I understand them simply letting her sleep with no pain and no horror from such information in her last moments of life. I believe Marlene knew Ellie wanted this, and that's why she decided to go ahead with surgery.Regardless, Fireflies decision was the same as Ellie's, whereas Joel didn't care about Ellie's wishes.

@@olgabahirkina1286 Ellie literally tells Joel after the fireflies do what they need to do, they can both go off together. She had zero expectation of dying at that hospital, and a terrorist cell using a child as a tool for their goals without her consent is not the same as a man killing to save her life without her consent. Marlene put Joel and Ellie in that position. And not giving her the option to choose for herself because “it would frighten her” is insane, you can’t actually believe that’s a logical or moral thing to do.

You’re all conveniently skipping over Joel killing people. Yes, the love of a parent is strong and he shouldn’t have to go through that, but he literally killed dozens to save one person ☠️ regardless of the context and background, it’s an act of lunacy. The show more than the game made me question if Ellie would hesitate to be the cure. I feel like she would in the end, but when she's talking to Joel about going through with what they started, she's planning on a future with him! She says she'll follow him anywhere. She's not prepared to die at that moment. Obviously both Joel and Marlene take her choice from her and as much as I can see Marlene's point, she's too afraid Ellie would want to live that it's almost worse what she does. To not tell her out of fear this CHILD would choose to LIVE is so gross and ironically, one of the most inhuman things we've seen someone do. And Marlene saying she understands Joel's pain, she absolutely doesn't. She loved Anna, but she had no contact with Ellie. She doesn't know Ellie. She also has no idea what it means to be a parent. Joel's spent almost a year protecting and learning to love this kid. She's his family. Marlene cannot understand that. I LOVED the hospital rampage. You see the Joel Tommy feared becoming. You see this man disassociate and become a killing machine. I loved not filming it like a John Wick style hero moment. It's also why I'm glad we didn't see Joel being violent this whole series, up until these last two episodes. We needed that to hit in the way it does as opposed to just another rampage Joel goes on. And Ashley! Oh my heart. Ellie birthing Ellie. Perfect.

Do our perceptions of the hospital scene change because we played the second game? When we first played Part 1 in 2013, Part 2 didnt exist so we experienced it in a vaccum. We need to save Ellie, we think of joel as a hero. But with the persepcitve if Part 2, do we reframe the hospital scene with that info in the back of our mind? Him killing Jerry for example means nothing to someone watching the show blind versus someone who knows that happens next.

47:56 Crazy detail... we don't see who that person is that is running away, Joel doesn't kill or pursue them. I am convinced that was Abby and that is a detail that will be referenced from her perspective later in the next season.

Or Owen. There's also another shot that stands out. All the other shots in this sequence are from a camera's perspective. Then there's one shot... looking through a doorway...as if it's not just a cool camera shot, but someone's perspective. Someone hiding.

Something kinda cool you can hit up on different TLOU twitter etc is that Abby was in the hospital at the nurses station she grabs something and sprints down the hall and Joel kills the man behind the counter and let’s her go. When she turns you see her braid swing when she turns to run 👍🏻. Also where the hell do you get bagged milk lol I’m Canadian BC born and raised and now AB and I have never seen one lol 🤷♂️. Great reactions ladies 🍻

And I’m still grieving for billing Frank even though they won the apocalypse I’m just gonna really miss their characters. I think they need their own series devoted to their 16 years together and flashbacks to the time before the apocalypse. I’d watch the shot out of that. 🍓🍷💔

Joel taking out the fireflies felt very school shooting coded to me. Brings up feelings of horror and inhumanity. Makes sense that it needed to feel so deeply wrong, even as we ultimately route for Joel and Ellie. It starts laying the foundations for empathisimg with Abby and the Salt Lake crew. Also, in giving Ellie the choice to turn back to Jackson beforehand, no doubt in her mind this is more blood on her hands. More people she thinks died because of her.

Spoilers. Just a hunch. In the next season, we might hear a full longer sentence from THAT Doctor, begging - just like in the game. Notice the lapse just before he shoots him, the sudden cut to joel - the doctor might still talking in between that. That one viewer that has early access to the episodes was right, they made him completely anonymous, total npc, and they made him easy to kill - Joel didn't even hesitate anyway. In this - we'll call it 'version ' - in this version, they heavily emphasized Joel's rage and all, everything that we're seeing was in Joel's perspective - sight, hearing.. the rest is filtered and clouded. That's what they intend - like a misdirection - because the deaths are not the focus here, the goal is to save Ellie, their dialogues doesn't matter. Remember that in TLOU part II, the flashbacks are shown in 3rd person's pov, a retelling - they showed us mostly the aftermath, it's probably where they would insert the doctor scene again, this time a more human version of him, willing to defend the only possible cure that exists.

that's a really interesting theory!! it reminds me of the chalet scenes in part 2, when you first go through it you're in Ellie's perspective and so you just hear the ringing in her ears and her screams. then when you revisit you're in Abby's perspective so you get to hear the conversation going on. absolutely one of my favourite moments of the entire game. I love perspective shifts on the same moment; they did it in episode 5 as well when we saw Henry hear Joel and ellie's car crash.

Oh man, I'm gonna miss you two. I've had the greatest time with the show and your reaction, it's really refreshing having queer stories being told in a genre so well known for being male dominated and straight. And having two queer people reacting to it, it is very moving. I would love to see more content from you two. Oh and I love milk Joel and milk Ellie!

I'm Canadian, and for all I've heard if it, I've never seen bagged milk in my part of the country, though I think it's more of a thing out east. We just have it in one litre cartons and four litre jugs, or roughly a quart and gallon respectively. We do have flavours of chips you don't, give ketchup flavour a try, you'd probably like it.

Just gotta say... I thoroughly enjoyed your reactions and commentary for this series. You bring so much insight and deeper discussion to this that your passion, for this property and its subject matter, is so clear to everyone watching. I know you probably don't want to become a reaction channel and you said so as well, but just because it was mentioned, I definitely would not be opposed to a "watch-through" in the similar vein as this for the Legend of Vox Machina. :)

I have a theory that stems from the confirmation of how ellie is immune. Maybe, since she has a version of cordyceps still its just mutated from birth. When Ellie and Abby fought in the theatre in part 2 ellie bit abby, could that mean that the cordyceps that ellie has could've passes through to Abby. Now she could be immune in part 3.
@fivestarguy100
Жыл бұрын
Yes, but she also bites a lot of people, David for instance. And in a less cannon example, whenever an enemy grabs her, Ellie bites them to get out of it. So Ellie biting people isn't all that uncommon, it's almost as normal as her defaulting to her switchblade. Also I'm pretty sure it was confirmed somewhere, that Ellie doesn't transmit Cordyceps when she bites people. So Abby is not immune. I will readily admit that I cannot confirm this so it may not be true.

Glad I came back for this reaction. When people point out negatives or things they don't like, I feel it plants negative seeds in my mind that take away from how much I love it. I'm glad you both liked the finale because you are both awesome and I care about your opinions. Also in the game it feels like it’s very questionable whether it will even work and the series it makes you feel like there’s a high probability that a cure could work. It still comes down to the choices we make and the fact that most of us would pretty much do anything for the people we love.

Not a gamer, probably never will play ever, but this is a Parent's perspective - If anyone is to be blamed now or later in season2 is Marlene & not Joel. If that doesn't happen whatever showrunners present is a simply a stupidity. Here's why - Joel's actions are direct result of Marlene's decision to hurry up things. Firstly did he have that opportunity to give Ellie a choice? They are saying that Joel didn't give her a choice & took away the chance to save humanity. Which is logically & factually wrong. Joel gets to give Ellie a choice only in one scenario - If Marlene told Ellie about the killing surgery, Ellie said yes to die willingly & is allowed to meet Joel. Then & only then he can allow or deny Ellie's wish. So Marlene didn't allow any of that. So as a parent Joel is left with only one thing to do & he did that thing. If Ellie says Yes & even then Joel kills everyone then & only then he is to be blamed.. Would Ellie say Yes to die? Maybe yes. But Marlene doesn't give that chance to Elli, therefore we don't actually know what Ellie might have said 'before' the surgery (Whatever she may say afterwards is her afterthought considering whatever happened). So before the surgery whatever Joel does is a direct consequence of Marlene's actions.. Never in the series Ellie was expecting to 'die'. She was hoping to get it done (maybe blood samples, tests etc.) & then go away to live with Joel happily. Why so much hurry from Marlene's part? They waited for 20 years, what's another couple of months? If someone just tells me that my child is being 'murdered' without their knowledge, I can't even see them & I was supposed to walk away from the premises; then no matter what the greater purpose of that murder is.. I would do the exact thing as Joel did! If HBO ignores this simple fact in next season & decides to blame Joel instead of Marlene then they will have very angry reactions from the parents. Protecting the children from the 'predator' is a primal animal instinct. The only thing I don't like on Joel's part is that he lied to her. IMO he should have been upfront about why he did it. Ellie might have disagreed with his actions but she definitely would have understood his motives (selfless/selfish love for his daughter) better. Was he afraid that killing of these many people will just feed her survivor's guilt? Or he is afraid that he will have to justify his actions? Or under her current PTSD influence will she see Joel as a bad person & end the relationship, or even worse take her own life?
