I used to go to this karate school that taught this style. My teacher was taught by a student of the third guy, Higaonna. I remember going to a some tournament that he was at, and we all got to shake his hand. I remember his hand being so callused that it felt like a rock.

The videos of karate masters remind me Reikichi Oya and Gichin Funakoshi of Okinawa. Karate do Nymohn was read by E. J. Harrison and he was inspired to make the Britishers familiar with Karate do. Do means way in Japanese. Harrison was a great spirited man with the black belt in judo four Dan. There were no videos and mobile phones in sixties. Only printed pictures were available to learn katas like pinan Katas, pinan shodan, pinan nidan and so on.

Putting aside their disrespect, some people aren't aware of the true purpose of forms and patterns. They see these beautiful movements and wonder how they are effective in a fight, never realizing that the secret to the form was never in the movement itself, but the habits and purpose the movements trained into the student.

So first I have to say it... the second guy literally went Master Roshi. I was confused and bewildered watching him change his physique like that. All I could think was "I'm such a dork but that's irl Kai-o-ken!" But seriously... I trained for a few years in Okinawan Shudokan, of the Toyama lineage. I've seen my own sensei perform the first and last kata. It's more impressive at the right speeds irl. But still amazing. But the second guy! My mind is blown

With training, you can move faster than you can see, or think, or feel. If you can move faster than you can see you can move faster than your opponent can see. Fast movements of light parts carry more momentum than slow movements of heavy parts; contrary to intuition. A light punch at 100mph will transfer more energy than a forceful punch moving much slower. You find yourself dazed and on the ground before you even feel pain. Karate.

It's been washed/worn so long it's become tattered. The wear look makes it look... well... worn, translate: doing karate along time. This actually is quite common. Personally, I like them nice and black, starchy and stiff like the day you got it. This isn't true for all styles but: 1 - 6 dan: black w/ stripes 7 - 8 dan: red/white or red/black 9 - 10: solid red

Please forgive my ignorance. I come from Taijiquan and a little Gongfu. I don't know any Karate so I have a question. It looks to me, that these masters (and other Karateka I've watched) don't use their hips for example while throwing a punch or block ... So ... do Karateka only generate power from their arms? Wouldn't it be more powerful if you rotate the hip? In this case you would only have your own bodyweight to create resistance and "get not sweeped away". With rotating the hips you connect more to the ground while moving so your stamce is stronger and so your other techniques are stronger too. So why don't karateka use their hips? Do they have another technique to connect with the ground?
@paperEATER101
6 жыл бұрын
Yes, in karate you use your hips. Watch it again, and watch closely, and you'll see that they are indeed using their hips to generate power.
@streetlethal3727

The hand movements are arm twists and traps.they are advanced kata ane are more difficult to read.😎🙏💪👊❤
@shankarsatheesan6846
6 жыл бұрын
It depends on the style. If it's a shuri-te descendent, then you see a lot of hip movement for power generation, because the idea is to use high speed for force, but the katas shown here are of Naha-te descent and hence the power generation is not fully from the hips, but the rather the full use of body muscles. I can't fully explain this, but if you look at the sanchin kata of goju-ryu or uechi-ryu, you will understand the difference.
@streetlethal3727

It takes imagination and visualization to understand what the movements are for in Karate and Kung Fu.
@zackiechan8680
6 жыл бұрын
There is hip rotation, but it's less obvious. My instructor told me that because most self-defense scenarios take place at close range, while more rotation would certainly generate more power, there wouldn't be enough time to react to an attack.
