Nadine and Frederik fulfilled their dream in 2019 and bought an old Black Forest villa with a shingle facade. They always wanted a house with history.
"In old houses, there are often these small fine details that make this old building charm complete. In our house, it's our apartment door with the 'please turn' bell and the box lock with pull knob, among other things."
"But old buildings are always a surprise, too. First you open the wall and then you take a look," Nadine laughs. Their Black Forest villa was built in 1920 on the site of a sawmill. The two fell in love with their "Villa Schindelkind" and made the redesign and renovation a joint project.
The two paid about 300,000 euros for the entire house - much of it was in need of renovation and most of it the two are renovating themselves. "At the beginning, I thought: everything is easy. But at some point there weren't enough hours in the day," says Frederik. The two benefit from the fact that he is a restorer for stone and wall painting and knows his way around the profession.
But the old Black Forest house is large and houses many construction sites. Their floor alone is 160 square meters, and the second floor is rented to an elderly couple who have lived in the apartment for 40 years. The top floor offers another 100 square meters, but the attic would first have to be converted.
Frederik and Nadine bought the house furnished: Old 60s armchairs, a secretary, cabinets, an old tube radio or even a safe. They lovingly converted it into a minibar. "Unfortunately, we didn't find any gold bars or a false bottom in the safe," Frederik smiles, "but maybe we'll find something in the attic."
The two have now been living in their old villa since November 2020. In the men's room, which has not yet been renovated, more furniture is piled up, which the two would like to integrate into their living concept. "Above all, the Internet is terrible as a source of inspiration - there are too many beautiful things that you then want to have. And then comes the point that you ask yourself how you actually do it," Nadine interjects.
To avoid arguments, the two divided up the rooms when it came to design issues. Frederik had the final say in the kitchen and Nadine in the bathroom. Together, they have a soft spot for the color green and old furniture.
Frederik and Nadine were particularly taken with the room layout on the first floor with "ladies' room" and "men's room". This is also visible in the parquet pattern, which is becoming increasingly high-quality from the living room to the ladies' room to the men's room.
"It's an eternal project: when we've renovated everything, we start all over again." But this project will have to take a short break for now, because Nadine and Frederik are expecting a baby.
