I love the way you have patience and still give plenty of praise when needed. It's amazing how many "teachers" on site expect beginners to pick everything up after 10 minutes! My 1st ever day on site I was sent with an old brickie who told me to split a load of concrete common bricks lengthways with a hammer and bolster and just left me to it.....needless to say he came back later to find me surrounded by brick rubble and absolutely no usable split bricks.....thankfully I had more patient journeymen after that! 😂

You shouldn’t teach anyone to have some mortar in their free hand. Should be on the brick trowel in their free hand it causes dermatitis and painful cracked skin in winter even with a glove what you then touch heats mortar smeared on it!

Oh, yes......I know this to my cost. My journeymen were always moaning at me for having handfuls of mortar when I was an apprentice, a few years later the itchiness of dermatitis drove me crazy.
