It is famous for "Toge no Kamameshi". In the old days, people bought ekiben in the small amount of time it took to increase the number of locomotives to go up the hill. This is the Kamameshi of the mountain pass. Please try it once. You can also cook rice in the kettle.

Tempura is general term for fried food using flour based batter (vs. Bread crumb type). Kakiage is tempura that looks like a patty with chopped veggies and/or seafood, etc. Soba is buckwheat thin noodle, and upon is thicker white noodle made of flour. At this type of noodle stalls (fast food), kakiage style is often used for tempura soba or upon topping.

It is a rather inconvenient place to get to, but one that should be visited historically. It is famous for its kamameshi, but the standing soba noodles are also delicious. Edited Postscript Tempura is made by mixing flour and eggs, adding vegetables and seafood, and deep-frying them in oil. Originally, tempura is crispy, but when added to soba or udon, it absorbs the soup and becomes soft. At first it is crispy because it hasn't absorbed the juice, but gradually it absorbs the juice and becomes even tastier. At large stations, you can eat soba (udon) standing up. You may not like the idea of eating standing up, but it is a traditional way of eating for Japanese people in a hurry. Please give it a try. It's very tasty. !!!!
