Hand tools before power tools is the most valuable bit of wisdom a father or grandfather can pass on to their proteges! You never know the value of a power tool unless you have done it the traditional way. Thanks guys!

Oldman Winter and you never know the value of a hand tool until you hand someone a board and say make a bookshelf...... Teach them with hand tools to make bird houses, book shelves, oven rack pullers and the like; then teach them how to make larger items with the power tools....

I really enjoyed your videos of the class, i have been contemplating taking one these classes myself, just never got around to taking one. I have been watching a lot of timber framing stuff on KZitem learning as i go over the years. This past winter i completed a 28x20 shed/workshop that i built using a hybrid timber frame setup, but the amount of time it was taking to hand cut all the stuff by the time i would start assembly on part of the frame everything was already drying and twisting on me, causing me to basically start over.... So i invested in a pantorouter and built a bunch of joint jigs to cut everything and was able to complete all the work i did by hand in a month in one weekend with that device. I didnt buy a setup, i hand built one after watching Matthias Wandel video's

Looked like a great experience. Thanks for the video. The tour of the houses was great because it showed the FEEL of nice design. I've lived in Europe where many half timber buildings use a system to maximize the span capabilities of the floor beams by cantilevering the stories. If you park a car in your house, use one, or better two layers of fire code gyp to separate the living area and use a fire rated door. This applies especially to areas far from a fire department. I'm an architect by training and have run a wood based commercial interiors manufacturing company for many years. I like wood used in a way that is un-altered in appearance by stains, paints etc. Unfortunately that is rare in my business.

I have to say, in my opinion this is one of your best videos! All the years you have been capturing video of all your activities have been very educational for you. I particularly enjoyed the advancement leading up to your training in Maine. I appreciated all the process you went through, good and bad. You both seemed to enjoy your training, learning new techniques, buying important tools, and coordinating with other students in your class. Thrilling to see you all raise the timber frame at the end. And, as always, I really enjoyed watching the outtakes. Look forward to your process in building your own home in the future.

I'm wondering how cold it is where you live, and how cold is it where the timber framing tradition is largest? How thick is the insulation? As thick as the logs? Or are you making the insulation thicker than the frame beams on the outside? It's also going to be interesting to se how windows, or the holes for the windows are built in a timber frame house :)

Usually after the timber frame is made they build a stick frame around the exterior. So in a lot of ways, timber frames in 2017 are largely aesthetic. The other thing you can do is buy SIPs and just fasten them to the frame.
@ForwardGuidance
7 жыл бұрын
"largely aesthetic" would imply the framing (main support) is basically fake which is very very very far from the truth. Your comment is without deep thought.
@t76d777f6d
7 жыл бұрын
Take my comment one step further. You can timberframe and then add stick built walls and roof, or you can stick build a home. The stick built home will always be a more efficient build. Timberframing is largely a choice made for an aesthetic or philosophical reason. If this comment bothers you, it should not. If your desire for a timberframe is strong, as mine is, it's important to be able to justify it. I want a timberframe home because they are gorgeous, force an open floor plan with vaulted ceilings, and can be made from trees felled on site. The satisfaction of working these beams into a beautiful home is enormous. It is like creating an heirloom home. These are my justifications and they are all aesthetic and philosophical reasons. Now that I have identified this, I can work towards the goal.
@ForwardGuidance
7 жыл бұрын
When timbers although pretty are responsible for the wgt of the entire house, I would not classify them as "largely aesthetic." That term doesn't really bother me. I just can't reduce the timbers to aesthetic when their role is so important. As I think about the fill between the timbers, I do wonder what that will be. They are implying a cheap build due to timbers. I can't see a cheap build. I have no interest in timber frame homes, but yeah they are beautiful.

Congratulations on your graduation, and your venture into Maine. The correct title of the piece that tune is from is "Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1" by Sir Edward Elgar, one of 6 military marches in his Opus #39. King Edward VII suggested with lyrics it would make a good song. For the "Coronation Ode", Elgar got Arthur C. Benson to set lyrics to it, the chorus of which begins "Land of hope and glory". On this side of the Atlantic, it is commonly, (dare I say 'invariably'?) used as a march at graduations. Hence, the instructor's attempt to invoke it vocally.
@escapeman9016

The bit played/hummed/murdered is actually the middle bit - the chorus. If you want to see what it is like during the Proms (Promanade), played every summer in the Royal Alber Hall in London (overflow to Hyde Park) look at: kzitem.info/news/bejne/omew36qipJqDgoo. The Last Night really shows how mad we Brits can be/actually are ....
