After going down a KZitem rabbit hole on how to make a simple steam engine and going from slide valve to piston valve, and how they work and could be used to recover some of the wasted heat from my furnace, and looking more into Stirling engines then rotary engine designs i wake up today and you have posted this, Cant wait to see what you come up with 😁

my non professional experience : any carbohydrate ( acetone ) will start to degrade after 60C in time. The speed of degradation of course will scale with temperature / pressure. I heard about mercury in professional generators, but I can't get my hands on mercury anymore.

I was looking for the fluid with the greatest thermal expansion possible. Of all i found that liquid CO2 just before the phase change to gas seems to be the biggest. Seems the co2 was used as the working fluid in a malone engine. Which is what you are doing.

how well would Nikola Tesla's expired patent 511,916 work for this?
