Hi Tessa!! What a great way to keep your older gals. It’s such a sustainable way for them to be kept around & still have purpose. Also, I have never seen a chicken’s wings being clipped before. That was totally new to me.

Thanks Rosa! I hope they have many more happy years there. Clipping their wings is pretty easy once you practice a few times. I used to need my kids' help holding the wing, but now I can manage the seemingly 3 hand operation by myself :)

Great approach! Only thing I’d have done differently would be to keep them enclosed for a week or so to their new home so they’d know where to roost. Great videos!

You're completely right! I posted an update the next day because I realized I should have done that exact thing. I closed off the calf yard so they would have a stall and a run area. They can slip through the gate and cattle panels there so they can come and go into the rest if the cow yard. It's been a few days now and they seem quite happy with their area 😊

Clipping their wings is almost sending them to a death sentence. It's the only defense they have . You put all your trust in a fence and then change nature to fit your own need for safety. Kinda backward. Same as getting chickens and killing all the wildlife, so they can be safe in your yard. Just get the proper fence and cover, let them have the wings they are born with.. it cry when you do it cause they don't like it.. try and clip ur wings. Sad that people think they have a right to change a living creature so they can own one.. your the adult human. Get the proper fence or dont have the animal.

I understand your concern and I see merit in your argument. I made the decision based on what I thought was the best I could do for them. She was nervous for a minute because they are used to being held, but I only handle their wings a couple times a year. Thankfully, with the proper technique, it feels like cutting our fingernails. Thanks again for your concern and predator pressure is something that I continuously monitor.
