"Old" JKA usually means between 1947 and 1964 a few years after Master Funakoshi's death, and up to the publication of the Japanese edition of A New Method of Instruction in Karate (Dynamic Karate) This is pure Nakayama Karate cica 1980. Anyway, "Old JKA" has a fairly specific meaning in Japan. 1964 through the publication of Best Karate is called the Nakayama era

JKA was always with a "foot" on the sports side of Karate but still Nakayama Sensei kept the training with a great % of extracts of Kata to practice more in the vein of self defense and a bit of body training however now is completely sports focused. All the splits; except may be the Asai´s Sensei continued in the sports side so I wonder why they did not do a different way of training! I took some classes in the other associations and is about the same.
