SO AWESOME!!!! I'm the fearless 76 year old that is doing my first piece, the ENTIRE dining room set including the table that seats 10. I've considered many colors including seafoam, blue, green and turquoise but decided on a soft dove grey with metallic silver accents and doing the top of table exactly as you have demonstrated in soft but natural wood grain finish. I'm a resent widow after 5 long years of my husband's brain injury hospitalization and i was in a very dark place of the heart but God's perfect timing has raised my spirits up and I'm feeling very much looking into the future and following my artistic self again. Thank you for the inspiration ❤

@@alebronlebrona6886 Thank you for asking. My vision seems light years away from reality! Initially planning on white base then grey and silver accents for a traditional look. New vision going to pale aqua with silver and gold accents plus using the Rustoleum Metallic White Pearl over the entire white dining room. Sadly i live in Canada specifically Mississauga (part of the city of Toronto)and the supplies are extremely difficult to hunt down. Besides the aqua and pearl wash i was planning to paint a garden with grasses, butterflies, birds and flowers on the sides of both buffet and sides. It's a challenge mentally and physically hunting for supplies of even basic paints very much unlike the beautiful and blessed USA. Most often because of covid the brick and mortar retailers have empty shelves and online shopping can be disappointing. God bless you for thinking of me. Not sure if i can send you pictures of my progress.

This was perfect as a vanity desk for me. kzitem.infoUgkxMAlHv7-BBWMrPRm5-uEoD6rtdT7SG2Qr Especially the glossy finish. Easy to cleanI was looking for something that wasn't the traditional white and with more of a modern feel. This fit the bill beautifully. I put it together with no problems, by myself in under an hour.Make sure you double check where you place the drawer tracks before screwing down. I had one track that needed to be aligned with different holes than the rest.

One tip of advice I'll give about the wipe on poly. Pay attention when purchasing to whether it is a clear gloss, satin, and there was also a warm gloss or I think a warm Satin. I do not have a clue what the warm finishes look like? And if you do not want any shine or gloss I recommend varathane three times the thickness matte finish. Don't be afraid of the milky white color! It dries to a clear flat matte finish. That is what I used on my barn doors

Hey Sue, you’re right there is a lot of info out there 😅 but you are correct that to stain you’ll need to strip the existing finish off and then stain but to paint, all you need is a scuff sand and a primer like Zinnser is great to add before painting also. It’s a fun hobby, enjoy your project!

You didn’t strip the chairs? Or sand? U just applied the white paint & then did the thing w the combination of waxes? I have an oak table much like yours but without a leaf in the center. However my chairs are made of a white fur if I remember correctly. I have had the set for 40 years & was saving for my daughter started thinking this would look so beautiful. The fur doesn’t have the grain that the oak does. I stained them years ago & covered w a poly I believe. Great video! Thanks 🙏🏽

I love this, I have this table, it does have that veneer too. I'm going to give this a shot. My questions 3 mos. later, are, did you sand the chairs 1st and could I use a water based paint instead of oil? I have never worked with oil based paint. Anyway, you may have answered this already, I'll look through the comments in the meantime. Thank you for such a beautiful design, especially the trim work!
@blacksheephouse
3 жыл бұрын
I scuff sanded most used parts of the chairs with a 220 grit sanding pad. The white paint i used for the chairs is water based, the only thing that was oil was the grey stain I used on the table and I had to use that because it was the only stain I could find in that color. A lot of furniture painters use a paint wash technique instead of stain to avoid chemicals. The way you do that is to mix water with your water based paint and then apply the same way you would apply a stain. I need to do a video on that! Hope that helps! General finishes makes a water based gel stain called ''no pain Gel stain" check that one out!

I’ve made a bunch of rookie mistakes and about to sand down and start over for the third time. I can’t very close to perfection this time but when I put on the wipe on poly stain it took up the dark stain. So did I not let the dark stain dry long enough? I did not use the gel version of Varathane Briar smoke but I did use the oil based stain by the company and added a bit of an oil based minwax gray to get closer to the color I needed.

Questions, this set looks just like mine, but is yours solid wood or is the top laminate or veneer? I think mine is veneer. Would it still sand down that cleanly? I'm just afraid I can't get rid of all the red. Second question, can you post pics of the after on the chairs? It went by so quick on the video. This is almost exactly what I'm looking for
@blacksheephouse
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ann, mine was a wood veneer so I had to be careful sanding, especially around the edges seemed to be where I was more likely to get a bit too deep sanding but it came out great! Don’t worry about the red, if you need to you can bleach it, I have lots of tutorials on that here on the channel. And sorry I did rush the chair part- I used Shirwin Williams trim paint in their popular white color - pure white. I cleaned the chairs really well and I would recommend using a primer if you don’t want to sand the chairs. Go for semi gloss on the paint for the most durability and if it’s too shiny for you then you can throw a coat of matte water based polyurethane to tone down the sheen and add even more durability. Hope that helps 🖤 I can’t share a picture here but I promise they were so beautiful, and you’ll love your table done with these colors

Do you have pictures of the chairs? I have the exact same dining room table and chairs that I’m refinishing. The set had been sitting in a carport for quite some time and the veneer was coming up on the table top. Therefore, it had too much damage to stain. Hey Yvonne! I do have pictures of the chairs if you will message me on Instagram or Facebook I can send them or email you. What I would do is try the pottery barn tutorial I have on here with the grey stain. It’s an old video so forgive the production quality but my “faux wood pottery barn technique” is great for veneer. kzitem.info/news/bejne/tqSZy5OHroqgfWU And here is me doing the technique (in brown) on a table top kzitem.info/news/bejne/mp6Aq3tqhqSLqHo Hope that helps!! PS you can use the Briarsmoke gel stain in the crevices of your chairs instead of wax if you want to save $ and just buy one product but be sure your chairs are already clear coated first so the paint doesn’t absorb the stain

If you have kids and are hard on your furniture you may want to do a water based polyurethane on top of the paint before you do the wax. The wax is really just for the look not for protection ❤️ you’ll want to use water based clear coat bc oil based will yellow slightly over time on top of white it’ll show but for other colors you’re good

Hi there, I totally understand being intimidated but the oil based is going to be the most durable finish for your table (plus I have not found a similar color in a water based product yet). Just be sure to lay your used rags and or sponges out to dry in a cool area like your garage or in the shade of your yard until they dry, then you toss them. You only run into problems if you wad them up while still wet from staining in a ball and toss inside a hot garbage can or something. DIYers use oil based (flammable) paints all the time, I promise you got this ❤️ I always just like to let people know because a lot of my audience are first timers ❤️

Hi. This table came out gorgeous. What about if I want the table sides, legs and chairs to be the same color as table too. Could you please explain the steps to do that? I’m totally new to this but I want to restore my 30 yo dining set that is dark walnut color

You’ll just sand them down to the raw wood like I do the top in this video and follow the same exact steps as the top. Sand, apply white wash, then grey stain and then top coat. I’m sure it’ll turn out great!

This project turned out beautiful! I have a table and chairs just like it that I got for $25 on FB marketplace. It’s in excellent condition except finish is coming off ( lucky for me) lol. My question is can I use a regular stain in the details on shirt of table and the backs of the chairs and use poly as the sealer instead of the waxes?

Yvonne, that’s actually such a great idea! I’m so glad you commented bc I just learned something valuable ❤️ that wax was such a pain to make in that color so I’m going to use stain from now on! I do think you have to test a spot to make sure it doesn’t absorb too much on the white paint. But since this paint has a sheen to it I would think it would just wipe away. Thanks again!!

Also, if you did 2 coats of stain, how much darker would it be?

After the paint is applied to chairs is there anything else that goes over it?

Your table came out beautiful ! I started working on a table that was painted dark gray and black. I sand it down and noticed that the paint soaked through the table . I used the White Wash and I’m still seeing the dark paint. I applied 2 coats already . Should I continue to apply until I see it’s lighter ? Or should I buy a darker wash ? If so what color should I buy ? I was really trying to stay in the gray color scheme . Thank you in advance !

Oh man! I’ve never had that happen 😲 Check out this other video of mine, it might be a better option for your unique situation.

@@blacksheephouse Hi, thanx for the reply . I actually end up putting a third coat of whitewash and went ahead with the gel stain. So, far it looks good ! Awaiting to put the wax on . Thank you

So, why do you use regular paint instead of chalk paint? What are the positives and negatives of each? Thanks. AWESOMENESS, by the way. Thank you so much for posting this.

I refinish a lot of stuff and honestly I just love trying different things! I love chalk paint and I love sherwin williams paint too! If you use a top coat with the chalk paint there really isnt a "better" one. I do want to do a video in the future comparing chalk vs latex tho! Latex doesn't distress well like chalk paint does and that's main reason people will choose chalk paint instead. I have found that if im carefull I can distress latex but it's not as easy and deosnt give as many distressed options like chalk paint. since I was just doing a tiny bit of distressing, I went for latex. Hope that helps!!
