The old town of Kranj, with earlier references to Carnium, Creina, Chreina, Krainburg, is a historic site on the conglomerate pier between the Sava and Kokra rivers. The area of the town has been inhabited since the Celtic period in the first millennium BC. As an important trading center, the settlement was granted urban rights in the 13th century and related numerous freedoms and benefits for further development in the field of trade and trade in agricultural products and in the development of iron industry. Until the mid-19th century, Kranj was a trade-fair and craft town, and with the advent of manufactories and at the end of the 19th century, industry became increasingly industrial. The town is adorned with bourgeois houses, beautifully designed streets, mansions, churches and houses with richly decorated facades and courtyards.
Tallhouse
Mitnica (Tallhouse) is a late medieval burgher house located in the city center of Kranj, by the bridge over Kokra. It is recognizable by its partly painted facade and a prominent cantilevered floor. The building was built in the first half of the 16th century and rebuilt in 1527.
Tunnels under old Kranj
Under the old town lies 1300 meters of underground tunnels, built during World War II, which served as a city shelter. The ditches became home to rare cave animals such as cave locusts and cave spiders. Interesting, though very rare, residents are also bats, that outperform acrobatic airmen by flying skills and even manage to dine in the meantime.
Khislstein Castle
Khislstein Castle is named after the Khisl family who bought it in the second half of the 16th century. The famous royal relatives passed on the property from hand to hand. With time and new owners, the castle was changing its appearance and function. The castle today houses the Gorenjska Museum with its educational exhibitions.
Kranj town walls
The steep canyon of the Kokra River, its location and the defensive wall made sure that the town was well protected in the past. The total length of the walls was 870 meters. Of the original nine towers, only three are preserved today - the Škrlovec tower, the Pungert tower and the remains of the tower in the Vovk garden.
Pungert
At the end of the rock pier is Pungert. The name is a derivative of the German word Baumgarten meaning orchard. It gives such a name to the fact that the gardens of the townspeople were located here. At Pungert, today we find the only fully preserved 16th century medieval defense tower. Pungert is also a popular spot for families and fans of good music today. The former are looking forward to events at the Pungert Children's Tower and outdoor playgrounds. Others enjoy mostly jazz rhythms that spread around the square during the summer months.
