A 90 year old man suffering with dementia isn’t the same as an arsonist. Having gone through it with both my grandpa and my dad ….you can’t be sure he is telling you the truth as it could have easily been accidental but his perception and memory of what actually happened blended with something he saw in a movie 20-30 years ago. I’d wait till the investigation was concluded before I accepted his word but wether he did it intentionally or not he needs to be in a state run assisted living home.

Yeah that makes it perfectly ok.
@jamiefinch3785
Жыл бұрын
@@MadScientist267 It's not a question of it "being okay". Obviously his actions were incredibly destructive. The point Al-1279 is making is that the man is clearly suffering from an illness that affects his thought processes. Dementia destroys the brain. Mental illness can completely disrupt thought processes and also damage the brain. Al-1279 is just explaining the reasoning behind why or how this man may have lit his apartment on fire. The fact that the old man did this does not necessarily mean he's a bad person, or a deliberate arsonist, or someone who enjoys causing chaos. Rather, this man is clearly confused and suffering from illness, and his awareness of his surroundings and actions may be severely impaired. That doesn't mean damage wasn't caused as a result of this man's actions; it certainly was. But it's critical that we consider the circumstances of these situations when deciding on an appropriate course of action. Is the man a deliberate arsonist? He may require rehabilitation via discipline (i.e. the justice system). Or is the man suffering from dementia? The more appropriate approach would then be rehabilitation via medical care and supervision in a assisted living facility.

It wasn't till Vietnam that veterans felt like the government owned them something beyond their years of service that they knew what they were signing up for. Before that they went out and started families and got jobs. I know there was mental health issues and many kids back then felt the wrath of it. The reality is the Boomers had it easier growing up than the Silent and Greatest generation and as a result they just couldn't mentally handle war the same way. Sadly, if you read the description, his psychosis is due to substance abuse. With his history as a veteran & age, it’s most likely to be alcohol related dementia. Still very sad that his mind is so affected, quite possibly from self-medicating due to effects from military service, or just from chronic alcohol or drug abuse. Yes, people like him do need more help though. But it’s difficult with people who chronically abuse drugs &/or alcohol. They don’t want to stop, and there are few places that will allow them to drink/take drugs because of the problems that come with that, of violence, abuse, self-neglect etc. And they’ve often alienated their family & friends, so they live alone in the community until they can’t. It’s a real Catch 22.

SHAME, SHAME, SHAME on EVERYONE that called this man 'a weirdo'. Nice way to treat one of our retired Marines! The GENTLEMAN is clearly suffering from long-haul PTSD that soooo many, many of our military suffer from! He should have been escorted to a calmer area and been assured that it would OK and that he's safe from the 'conspiracies' of which he speaks of. Notice how he said that the only way that he could get someone there was to set the fire, clearly indicating that he was back in the war zone and begging for his brothers-in-arms to get to the battle zone and help with the assignment at hand. Semper Fi Mr. Hicks. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!! Las Cruces Police Department and First Responders - you are a disgrace!
@itzplank7238

Yeah I get that and respect it but he also could’ve killed people. They were probably more upset about that prospect. Having ptsd and being in the marines isn’t an excuse to light fires in your residence, clearly should be under supervised help.

There was a similar incident in my city but the guy then realized he was trapped and jumped off the fourth floor and ended up dying. So many people were left homeless and many pets were lost as it was a very large apartment building. So sad. This is why I hate apartment buidlings. I have a neighbor right now that has threatened to burn the place.

Sounds like dementia a little bit with the unfounded Paranoia and general confusion. This is tough because it sounds like the old guy is at the beginning of the really hard part of dementia where you can almost live independently still. Hes going to need a helper soon. I see a lot of what happened to my dad here a few years ago when he started having hallucinations but he was at home with other people around not out in some apartment by himself. It gets worse really shockingly fast sometimes he needs a place with some people quick or his daughter who is paying for the place to stay over til he has to go into a place more fitting for someone with severe dementia. He shouldn't be in an apartment like that

In this video, they were discussing where he should be placed, because there's no way in hell he can live with just a helper. He needs 24/7 care now. They told his daughter she needs to arrange for him to be placed in a home immediately. They weren't about to let him just continue living independently.

The residents just standing around is the same energy as seeing a dangerous creature and your first instinct is "Touch". Where were they when they were learning about fire safety? These people need to learn some common sense. That being said, it is an amazing feeling when you know you literally saved someone's life, it is a rush you will never find from anything else in life. I’m not gonna lie the whole part about how the officer and the nurses where talking made me feel happy, it was a really wholesome moment from the entire situation

Everyone always thinks they'll act rationally and work through all the proper steps during an emergency like a well-oiled machine, but they never account for the shock. People just freeze. It's pretty crazy to witness it in person. It's not really anything to do with common sense, 90% of people are well aware of what they should be doing. They're just in an involuntary mental state (shock) and completely fogged over.
