For you who are whining that "250 is useless!" go to Bike Calculator and put in the numbers: A 225 lb rider on a 60 lb bike up a 6% hill, using 250 watts from a battery and 150 watts of pedal power (quite modest effort) will get up the hill at about 10 mph. And he'll soon be in lots better shape than the frump who glides up the hill pulling 750 watts of battery power without pedaling.

PS: Putting this into perspective: a 160 lb rider on a 20 lb road bike pedaling at 250 watts will get up the 6% hill at 10 mph

Not everyone gets a bike to get fit! Some people have physically demanding jobs and don't want to be sweating amd shagged out before they even start work so a 750w ebike is just the job
@dugldoo

Kevin, I'm with ya on that, but a casual rider who's not in it for fitness or for 40 mph recklessness really never needs to go over 150-200 watts, so 250 is plenty, gives ya more options, and will cost lots less.

Wouldn't it make more sense to put a hub motor on the FRONT wheel and not piss up all your gearing and crap? And that way if your hub motor fries you can swap it out so much easier? That way you could also have a petrol motor to the rear wheel if you wanted.

no, it doesn't. you get better traction with a rear hub vs a front hub, the frame of bikes is much stronger on the back than the front, and the extra weight doesn't take getting used to so you're far less likely to end up hurt (as steering is always with the front, the back wheel being the trailing one makes it much easier to keep using if the balance shift is near the back) rear vs front also provides more power, in part thanks to the ease of them utilizing gears and getting to your pedal movements

@@markifi 304 euros and for transport is 30 euros. The kit is 1500w that means you will get 50-60 km /h very powerful. Bought from Spain you don't pay at the customs and the Vax tax is already included. The battery is not included, but if you want a good battery it will be 400 euros for the battery itself. 48/52v 21ah for long range 80 km. Total is 734 euros. Aunque bueno suficiente.

if you're going to buy an ebike kit go for one with a dual mode controller. if the hall sensors in the hub fail the motor will continue to work and work well. some actually remove the sensors and the wiring and put beefier cables to power the motor instead so they can shove more amps to it.

There are lots of alternatives to pas. I’ve only built 4 ebikes. My first doesn’t even have pas. Just a throttle (I use my brain to choose how much to boost). You can get a split PAS that clips onto your bb, without removing the crankset. The most common PAS only requires removing the left crank.

No! 250 is great, as he clearly demonstrated. We have wonderful bike/walk paths near me. But they're filling up with efatbikers who are newbies to cycling and don't have good bike handling skills. They think "bigger is always better" and they get going on their new, very heavy, hard-to-handle bikes going 25 + mph and make the paths very dangerous for walkers and other cyclists ... and themselves. Yet they seem to care not at all about anybody else.
